Boston College has produced current NFL defensive ends Ron Brace and Tim Bulman along with pro bowlers Matt Ryan and B.J. Raji. Now defensive end and Quebec native Mehdi Abdesmad is getting the opportunity to learn from the same program that produced 20 current NFL players.
āI chose BC because they play in a very good conference in the Atlantic Coast Conference. They are a good football program and it is a great school that gives a good education,ā said Mehdi Abdesmad. Abdesmad was offered scholarship from UConn, Baylor and Akron, but Boston Collegeās location was ideal for his situation. āI liked the fact that the campus was close to home and my family can come see me play.ā
Even though Boston College is struggling this year with only one win in their seven games, there is still a lot of competition between teammates who are battling for playing time.
āFootball in the USA is really big. Itās really different than in Canada. Everybody is good here they are strong and fast. You have mandatory lifts three times a week. There is always competition which is pushing you to be better,ā said Abdesmad.
Abdesmad has seen some action this season with the Eagles playing a backup role in his freshman year. He said practices are not easy and coaches are always trying to see how fare players will elevate their game.
āPractices here are really intense and at a high tempo, they are always pushing you to your maximum. For the moment, another defensive end and I are battling for second on the depth chart so we are rotating in games.ā
Living on residence has not been an issue for Abdesmad because of the quality of teammates he has. āIt wasn’t too hard to adjust to campus life since all the guys have welcomed me very well.ā
Camaraderie amongst teammates is important if Abdesmad and the Eagles are looking to salvage their season. With five games reaming in their regular season, they would most likely have to win all of them to make a bowl game.
For Abdesmad, itās all about getting better as a player and making sure he gets the most out of his college experience.
āI’m looking to make it to the next level but if it doesn’t happen I will have gotten a great education and a prestigious degree from Boston College.ā
