New OFC Record as Beefs win Finale

Kyle Woldenberg-Puyda #25 – 40 carries, 308 yards

It wasn’t easy but in the end the Beefs prevailed over the Brampton Bears 19-16 in their final game of the season. Carmine Gentile secured the victory with an 11 yard field goal with 6.3 seconds remaining in the game.

The story of the game, however, was Kyle Woldenberg-Puyda who rushed for 308 yards on 40 carries, both Beefeater team records and the latter an OFC record.

Tony Daugherty held the previous yardage record at 250 in 1990 while Troy Cooper carried 32 times in a game in 1996 to hold that previous record. Had it not been for several carries called back due to penalties, Woldenberg-Puyda would most certainly have smashed the OFC single game record for rushing yards which was set many years ago by Craig Carter of Windsor at 355 yards. In total the Beefs put up a net offense of 450 yards, 90% of it on the ground.

Penalties and turnovers, however, dashed several scoring opportunities and the determined Bears refused to give up. Both of the Brampton touchdowns came on turnovers, first an interception return and then a blocked kick. Each touchdown was converted and the Bears added a safety.

For London, C.J. Zsoldos scored a touchdown, Carmine Gentile had 3 field goals, a single and a convert and the Bears conceded a safety. Zsoldos chipped in 64 yards rushing while James Morrissey added 32 yards rushing on a nifty reverse. Morrissey also had 2 receptions for 45 yards while Zsoldos had 2 catches for 9 yards.

Defensively Rob Bowman, Chris Vanmeppelenscheppink and Rob Varallo led the way. Of note is that all three are eligible to return next season.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
