Newest X-Men

Whitby linebacker joins AUS team’s 2014 class.

Andrew Smith is returning north of the border to begin the next leg of his gridiron journey.

Recently, the 5ā€™9, 200 pound linebacker/safety from Whitby, Ontario committed to the St. Francis Xavier (ST.FX) X-Men for the 2014 AUS season.

There were several factors that influenced his decision to sign with the Antigonish, Nova Scotia team.

ā€œThe reason I picked St.FX wasn’t only because of the beautiful campus, but because of the pride and tradition the coaches put into the program,ā€ explained Smith of his commitment.Ā  ā€œIt made me feel very comfortable and excited to get started.ā€

ā€œAnother reason I picked St.FX was because of the beautiful business building on which I will be studying in next year! My father Michael Smith was an All-Canadian at St.FX and hearing stories from him it was hard not to attend the school. I had options in the states to go to university but I committed to St.FX because I felt like it was where I would be most successful in my life and enjoy my time as a university student athlete.ā€

Smith comes to the X-Men after attending the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.Ā  In 2013, the defensive standout led in tackles with 110 as well as recorded a sack, caught an interception and had two fumble recoveries ā€“ one which he converted into a touchdown.Ā  Not only was he a Team Captain, but he was selected on All-State and received All-Southwest honours at the linebacker position.

He will be reunited with CFC TOP 100 defensive end Kyle Forde, who has also signed with the X-Men for the 2014 season.

ā€œIt was an outstanding experience where I walked away with great knowledge and friendships,ā€ added Smith of his time in Bradenton, Florida.

Previous to IMG Academy, Smith suited up for the Donald A Wilson Gators of the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (LOSSAA).Ā  During his stint with the Gators, he was named League (LOSSA) MVP in grade 11 ā€“ his first season on the senior Gators squad.
