CCWFL unleashes names and logos for charter franchises

Having been released at the Skills Camp on June 28, the Central Canadian Women’s Football League unveiled the names and logos for its four charter franchises. It continues to whet the appetite of eager fans, building up the excitement for the newest era in Canadian women’s football. While the locations of competition are not yet official, tentative locations include York Region, Mississauga, Hamilton/Burlington and Toronto/Scarborough.

Mentioned in alphabetical order, the names shall include Knights, Monarchs, Rays and Stingers. In partnership with MadLabs, the logos for each of the four franchises encompass unique shapes and color schemes that are truly a distinguishing feature. Of note, logos for the Rays and Stingers encompass an animal theme in their design, while the Knights and Monarchs consist of a medieval motif.

In terms of colours, the Rays are certainly the most visual. A blend of different shades of blue (the darker blue runs along the bottom half of the Rays name), while a teal blue stingray adorns the top, its orange eyes sticking out and a football gripped firmly, it is poised to emerge as a favorite among younger fans.

Following is the Stingers, with a sharp font adorned in yellow with a trace of black along the letters. In the background is an enraged hornet with bright red eyes ready to sting. While the hornet has been incorporated in logos throughout professional and collegiate sports, there was almost a Saturday morning cartoon look to most of them. This is among the rare logos where it provides an intimidation factor for opponents.

With a sword firmly entrenched through a football, the Knights logo is hard to miss. Blonde hair flowing in the background adds a feminine touch, while a purple and silver color scheme is complemented by a touch of black. As a side note, the Lethbridge Steel of the Western Women’s Canadian Football League employs the purple and silver for their team colors and it is one of the most striking combinations in their league.

A mystic look defines the logo for the Monarchs. Akin to the Knights logo, it harkens back to a long lost age of wizards and gallantry. While the word Monarchs features yellow and burgundy colours as part of its lettering, a princess holding a scepter with a football at its top is the main visual in the logo.

Coincidentally, the use of the name Monarchs was used for charter franchises in two other sports leagues. The World League of American Football (which morphed into NFL Europe) had its London, England-based franchise nicknamed the Monarchs. Another female sports league, the Women’s National Basketball Association had a charter franchise out of Sacramento who also used the Monarchs moniker.

As anticipation builds towards opening kickoff, the introduction of the names and logos promises that the best is yet to come.
