Oakville was held off the scoreboard the remainder of the contest while the host Invaders answered with 29 points of their own, defeating the Longhorns 29-7 and dropping Oakville to 3-4 with a week left in the NFC regular season.
The Longhorns will host the Tri-City Outlaws (4-3) this Saturday at Bronte Athletic Field (a 7 p.m. start) in a game that will determine which squad has home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Oakville quarterback Kyle Sewell connected with Chris Hibbert for a 75-yard touchdown pass in the opening minute last weekend against Ottawa, but the Longhorns managed only 85 more passing yards and 52 rushing yards the rest of the way. Ottawa (6-2) racked up 211 rushing yards and added 252 more through the air to easily overcome 140 yards in penalties.
Hibbert finished the game with 148 receiving yards. Sewell completed 10 of 21 passes but was picked off three times.
Lincoln Downs led the Oakville defence with seven tackles.
The Longhorns and Outlaws clash is one of several meaningful games this weekend as the NFC concludes the regular season. Sarnia (4-3) visits the Toronto Raiders (2-5), while Sault Ste. Marie (2-5) visits Sudbury in other NFC action.
The Toronto Titans (8-0) are locked into top spot in the eight-team league, Ottawa is guaranteed a second-place finish and Sudbury is assured a last-place finish and first-round visit to Toronto. The rest of the standings is subject to change this weekend.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
