Coming off a 44-7 offensive explosion in their home opener, the Ottawa Invaders travelled to Sudbury on Saturday and picked up right where they left off in a rematch against the Spartans.
Deadlocked after the first quarter, the Spartans appeared to be a completely different team as they came out looking to swing momentum early. Sudbury was unable to do so and Ottawa’s pressure became too much as their ability to force turnovers took over the game.
The first score came from Invaders Allens Pierre who returned a 38 yard interception to get things going in the second quarter. The first touchdown was also the first of 5 interceptions on the day and 7 total forced turnovers by Ottawa’s stellar defence.
Other outstanding Invaders interceptions came courtesy of Andre Charron, Rhami Aboud, Alvan Umba and DJ Idenhan, while Jeff Bowie and Christian Contreras each had a fumble recovery.
Punishing defensive efforts were also brought forward by Maxim Lepage with his second sack of the season and Chad Bellardine who led Ottawa with 5 tackles.
Not to be out done, the Invader’s offence was relentless after being held off the score sheet in the first quarter. Totalling 316 yards offence to Sudbury’s 117, Ottawa was able to capitalize 7 times between the 25 carries and 6 completed passes throughout the game.
Shenfield Excellent led the way with 55 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns. Matt Duffy, TJ Williams and Jeff Hildreth were also able to slip through the Spartans defence with clutch runs on the way to an Invaders victory.
Jeff Hildreth had another great game and showed no ill effects from the injury which forced him out of last weeks action. The Invaders quarterback threw for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns to Danny Mullins and Matt Harmer before the 55-0 onslaught ended.
Jeff Morris was also extremely effective in helping ice the win for Ottawa with 7 point after completions.
The Ottawa Invaders look to continue their winning ways when they host the Toronto Raiders on Saturday June 16. Both teams are sitting at 2-1 records this season, making this game an early test of NFC authority and a must win for both organizations. Kickoff is at Keith Harris Stadium at 7 pm.
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
