In a rematch of last years Northern Football Conference Championship on June 30th, the Ottawa Invaders looked to turn the tables on their adversaries the Tri-City Outlaws.Β Β Tri-City pulled out a late 1 point victory in the last meeting between these two teams, ending the Invaders incredible post season push on a bitter note and making this contest a highly anticipated affair.

Tri-City had come out victorious in every other meeting with Ottawa leading up to Saturday’s match-up, however the Invaders looked poised and prepared, hoping to keep their winning streak alive and bring themselves one step closer to clinching home-field advantage for this years playoffs.

The Outlaws and Invaders shared second place in the NFC until Saturday’s game, meaning the battle of the 3-1 teams was much more than a rematch for pride and bragging rights.

Coming in to the game Ottawa’s quarterback Jeff Hildreth was ranked second in NFC passing with 839 yards and 8 touchdowns, while Danny Mullins sat at fourth overall in receiving.Β Β The Invaders dynamic duo were at it again Saturday, hooking up in the early stages along with a major from TJ Williams to give the visitors strong offensive pressure out of the gate.

Tri-City’s defence was exceptional however, not only holding off the Invaders for most of the game, but allowing the Outlaw offence to take the lead in the dying minutes even with both quarterbacks injured.Β Β Tri-City touchdowns came courtesy of Mike Montoya (2), Marc Fernandes and Aron Froese.

Not to be outdone, the Invaders defence stepped up huge with two interceptions from Rhami Aboud and Andre Charron late in the game.Β Β Each pick leading to a touchdown from Jeff Hildreth to Danny Mullins in the final four minutes.

The second of these touchdowns ultimately sealed the Ottawa Invaders comeback, overcoming a 12 point deficit for a 28-27 final.

The Invaders, who have not lost since their season opener, are now on a four game winning streak and sit one victory away from clinching home-field advantage for the 2012 playoffs.Β Β The team travels to Sault Ste. Marie, Saturday July 7th, to take on the Steelers.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
