Blues host Ravens

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team is gunning for a big win when they host the Carleton Ravens this Friday, September 27 at Varsity Centre. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.

The Blues (1-4) are looking to get back into the win column after their Week 2 victory at Laurier. The Ravens, who re-entered the league this season after a 15-year hiatus, are 0-4 at the midway point of the season.

“We’ve said all year, we take it game-by-game,” said Varsity Blues head coach Greg Gary. “Last week was last week. This week is Carleton and that’s what we are focusing on. We will be ready on Friday night.”

The two teams have met five times in the regular season, dating back to their first meeting in 1971. Toronto holds a 4-1-0 record in the head-to-head series.

Toronto is coming off a 26-11 loss to the Windsor Lancers (3-2), while the Ravens fell to the York Lions (2-2) 50-34 at home on Saturday.

Fifth-year Blues receiver Paul de Pass is coming off a career-high performance last week. The Ajax, Ont., native  recorded a career-best 192 yards on 12 catches, which moved him into second in all-time Varsity Blues career receiving yards leaders (Mark Magee, 2385, 1977-81) with 2,000 even. De Pass currently ranks third among OUA receivers, averaging 96 yards per game.

QB Simon Nassar stepped in for an injured Chris Jugovic on Saturday and also had a career-high performance, going 25-for-43 for 397 yards.

Third-year linebacker Dylan Gordon (Cambridge) continues to shine as he ranks second in the CIS with 35 tackles in five games. Harrison Beeforth (Richmond Hill) sits second in the country with six sacks so far this season.

Toronto’s offence will have to keep their eyes on Carleton’s Leon Cenerini, who tops the national rankings with 44.5 tackles.

Jesse Mills has assumed the starting QB role, averaging 201 yards and one TD per game. Kyle Van Wynberghe has been his favourite target, averaging 97 receiving yards per game.

The game will be streamed live and live stats will be available at GoBlues.tv. Advanced tickets are on sale here.

The NFL On Campus experience hits Varsity Centre Friday night, which will include interactive NFL-themed experiences for students and fans leading up to and during the game, such as authentic NFL Draft Combine tests, a Lambeau Leap photo opportunity and NFL kick n’ pass, QB Challenge and Bungee Run zones.
