The Marauders extended their record to 6-0 on the year won their 16th straight game, dating back to Week 2 of the 2011 season. They remain the only team in the OUA with an undefeated mark on the year. The Lions, meanwhile, dropped to 1-5.
Both of York’s touchdowns were scored by Jonelle Tolbert of Mississauga, Ont., the first from quarterback Myles Gibbon of Montreal in the second quarter and the second late in the fourth by back-up Dimitar Sevdin of Toronto.
McMaster quarterback Kyle Quinlan of South Woodslee, Ont., threw three touchdown passes in the contest, and Marshall Ferguson of Kingston, Ont., who came into the game in relief in the third quarter, accounted for one.
Running back Kasean Davis-Reynolds of Mississauga, Ont., also had a big game and accounted for a pair of touchdowns.
The Marauders began the game by fumbling on the opening kickoff, leaving the Lions in advantageous field position starting on the Marauders 42-yard line. The Lions, however, were forced to punt after failing to earn any first downs.
On their first drive, McMaster moved the ball down the field, piling up yardage on the way to scoring position. They put up the first points of the game with a 34-yard field goal from kicker Tyler Crapigna of Nepean, Ont., just under five minutes into the game.
York’s offense continued to struggle, and they were forced to continually punt from their own end. On their return drive, Quinlan nearly threw for a touchdown but for an excellent break-up by rookie Chris States of Brampton, Ont., on a second down. The Marauders settled for another field goal off the foot of Crapigna at 7:54 of the first quarter.
McMaster later added their first touchdown of the game on a 38-yard run by Davis-Reynolds. Crapigna kicked in the extra point, bringing the score to 13-0 in favour of the Marauders.
York’s offense made its first significant play late in the first quarter, as Gibbon found receiver William Austin of St. Catharine’s, Ont., for a 31-yard completion, but the Lions couldn’t bring themselves into field goal position and were forced to punt again.
McMaster’s second quarter return drive resulted in another touchdown, this time with Tyler Loveday of Kitchener, Ont., receiving a 19-yard touchdown pass from Quinlan. With Crapigna’s extra point kick, the Marauders advanced to 20-0 just over two minutes into the second quarter.
A strong kick return by States left the Lions in favourable field position for their return drive. Gibbon helped to move down the field, picking up a 20-yard run, and ultimately concluded the drive with the 13-yard touchdown pass to Tolbert with just a little under 10 minutes left in the half. Ryan Lambert of Grimsby, Ont., kicked in the extra point to bring the score to 20-7 for the Marauders.
When the York defense held the Marauders out of field goal position, they faked a punt and tried to throw for first down, but Alex Bugdahn of Torontointercepted the pass and returned it 27 yards.
Unfortunately, York’s offense was again stifled, forcing the Lions to punt again. Marauder Brad Fochesato of Windsor, Ont., caught a pass for a 62-yard touchdown on the answering drive with less than four minutes remaining in the half. Crapigna added another extra point, and the first half finished with the score 27-7 for the Marauders.
The Marauders continued to take advantage of the York defense in the third quarter, with Davis-Reynolds picking up another touchdown on a 24-yard run just under four minutes into the quarter.
The Marauders scored another exciting touchdown just a short time later as Quinlan made a huge pass down the field to find Andrin Masotti of Stoney Creek, Ont., just breaking free of a defender to run free into the end zone, marking up a 78-yard touchdown at 8:57 of the third quarter. Kicker Crapigna added another extra point, and closed out the third quarter scoring a rouge for another point.
Crapigna added another field goal a little over six minutes into the final quarter. McMaster scored their final touchdown of the game with short pass from replacement Ferguson, throwing a short pass to Josh Vandeweerd of Burlington, Ont. Crapigna added the extra point, bringing his point total for the game to 16.
Sevdin’s touchdown to Tolbert was on a 48-yard pass into the corner of the field, and Tolbert dove across the goal line for the score with less than one minute left in the game. Lambert added his second extra point.
The Lions will now prepare for their big rivalry game against the Toronto Varsity Blues, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1pm at Varsity Stadium. The Blues are 2-3 on the year and will play their Week 6 game on Saturday against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
