No.5 Gaels down Warriors in Waterloo

WATERLOO  – The No. 5 Queen’s Gaels beat the Waterloo Warriors 78-21 marking the second most points scored in a single game in Queen’s football history.

Dillon Wamsley (London, Ont.) also had a record setting night for the Gaels as his 52-yard field goal tied the Gaels longest field goal record set by Blaine Shore in 1979.

“I really thought there were a lot of good things tonight,” said head coach Pat Sheahan after the game. “They were undermanned tonight but there was some great execution. Guys really made some great plays and we had some new faces in there on defence and they played pretty well.”

Doug Corby (Burlington, Ont.) finished with three touchdowns, two receiving and one on a return, to lead the Gaels while Jesse Andrews (Arnprior, Ont.), Daniel Heslop(Scarborough, Ont.) and Jonah Pataki (Wallaceburg, Ont.) all ran for over 100 yards each. Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) was 12-15 with 215 yards and three touchdowns all coming in the first half.

Waterloo was led by Brian Chris who threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Glorian Ganza and Christian Lewis hauled in both scores from Chris and Alexander Doczi added his own on the ground.

In the first quarter the Gaels scored early and often. Heslop started things off with a 42-yard run for a touchdown and McPhee followed up with a 63-yard connection toGiovanni Aprile (Scarborough, Ont.).

A Corby punt-return 53 yards for a touchdown was followed by Cory Dyer (Gananoque, Ont.) who added a touchdown off a fumble recovery to bring the Gaels lead to 28-0.

After the Warriors conceded a safety Wamsley closed out the first quarter with his record tying 52-yard field goal and the Gaels were out in front 33-0 after one.

Ryan Granberg (Sherwood Park, Alta.) started the second quarter with a five-yard rushing score and the Warriors got their first points on the board right after. Christian Mahler blocked Wamsley’s punt attempt and the Warriors recovered. Chris then connected with Ganza for a 10-yard touchdown.

It was all Gaels afterwards with McPhee connecting on passing touchdowns to both Corby and Scott Macdonell (Montreal) to close out the first half up 54-7.

The second half saw Andrews add a pair of rushing scores and Corby nab his third touchdown of the night. Waterloo added two more scores as Chris connected with Lewis and Doczi ran in a two-yard score after the Warriors took a fumble to inside the Gaels 10.

The Gaels finished with a 78-21 final, just two points shy of tying their all-time high for points scored in a game.

Next up for Queen’s is their final home game of the season at a sold out Richardson Stadium for the second homecoming of the year.

2013 Graduating Seniors:

Russell Kovshoff (Toronto)Β 

A defensive end from Toronto, Russell is graduating this year in the Recreation and Business program.Β  A great contributor on the field, Russell is a leader off the field in assisting with the outreach programs of both the football team and the athletic department.Β  His selfless upbeat attitude will be missed by all.Β  With Russell today is his parents Selina and David.

Spencer Thompson (Kapuskasing)Β 

A defensive end from Kapuskasing, Spencer began his football career at Waterloo having never played football before.Β  A tireless worker in the off season both in the weight room and in the classroom, Spencer has overcome many obstacles to becoming a team captain for the Warriors.Β  Spencer is graduating in Health Studies and looking forward to medical school.Β  We know his whole family, who could not be with us today are proud of him.

Harrison Mair (Vancouver/Vancouver College)Β 

A defensive back from Vancouver, Harrison only came to the football program last year after 3 years with Warrior basketball.Β  Last year, Harrison was tied for 3rd in the CIS in interceptions, but this year has been unable to play due to injury.Β  His absence is sorely felt by the Warrior defence.Β  Harrison is graduating this year in Honours Peace and Conflict studies, this Academic All-Canadian is here today with his grandparents, Peter and Lloy Jeffeson and Ian and Kay Mair.

Matt Tolliver

A defensive lineman for the Warriors, Matt came to the program from Hamilton and will be graduating this year in Recreation and Business.Β  Matt is a fierce competitor and his dedication and commitment to playing through injury is well admired by all his teammates and coaches.Β  Matt’s parents were unable to be here with us today, but we know how proud they are of him.

Β Harrison Thomas (Oakville)

Harrison is a 4th year receiver in Geography and Environmental Studies from Oakville.Β  A 3 year starter, Harrison possesses a great blend of speed and agility making him a threat to go deep on every play.Β  His infectious smile and good humour made him a favourite in the locker room and off the field, Harry will be sorely missed by the coaching staff and teammates.Β  With Harrison today is his Mom and sister.

Brandon Eaket (Kitchener)Β 

Brandon was named one of the top 40 people under the age of 40 by the Waterloo Record last year for his selfless sacrifice to the community through coaching at all levels including special needs hockey, all while overcoming significant personal challenges including being the primary caregiver for his brother.Β  This Legal studies student from Kitchener will be graduating this year.Β  His dedication and willingness to help his teammates will always be cherished by the coaching staff.Β  Brandon is supported today by his parents Bernice and Richard.

Brian Chris (Waterloo)Β 

Brian has shown great courage during his time as the Warriors quarterback, playing through injury and pain while remaining upbeat and positive.Β  A great competitor, Brian’s ability to stay in the pocket to complete a pass while taking a hit is greatly appreciated by the Warrior coaching staff and his teammates.Β  Brian is graduating this year in Recreation and Leisure and is supported today by his dad and Warrior receivers coach Dr. Tony Chris and his mom, Warrior supporter extraordinaire, Eileen.

Djordje Gavrilovic (Waterloo)Β 

A defensive lineman from Waterloo, Djordje has been a stalwart on the Warrior defensive line for 5 years.Β  An interior force with great ability, he has been long counted on for his upbeat locker room presence and his commitment to the program and our younger players.Β  Djordje will be graduating this year with a Sociology degree and will be greatly missed by the program.Β  With him today are his parents, Rajko (pronounce Rayko) and Ljiljana (pronounce Lillyanna).

Nick Anapolsky (Guelph )Β 

A wide receiver from Guelph, Nick was an All-Canadian in 2012, is in the top 10 all time receiving leaders here at Waterloo and was the Warriors MVP last year.Β  A team captain and graduating this year from Recreation and Leisure Studies, the Warriors will miss his tenacious play and leadership skills.Β  Nick is supported today by his mom and dad, Nancy and Gary Anapolsky.

Matt Vonk (Burlington)Β 

Matt Vonk (Burlington) epitomizes the true heart of a Warrior Football player.Β  A draft pick of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, he is the Warriors starting center and plays significant time on the defensive line all while playing with a hand broken at the start of training camp.Β  The leader of our team, he has been a multiple Academic All Canadian has graduated from Kinesiology and is now enrolled as a Masters student in Kin.Β  Here today with Matt is his Mom, Melanie Parsons and his Dad, Mickey Vonk.

From all of our coaches, support staff, friends, fans, alumni, and teammates, to all of our graduating seniors and their families, thank you for all that you have contributed to the Warrior Football program.Β  You will all be missed.
