No.7 Ranked Carabins Cruise to Victory Over McGill

MONTREAL – Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze of Repentigny, Que., threw for 337 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the No. 7-ranked Montreal Carabins defeated McGill 30-7 in Quebec University Football League play at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.

The Carabins, which led 7-0 after one quarter, 13-0 at halftime and 16-0 after three quarters, amassed 497 net yards, compared to 315 by the Redmen.

Nadeau-Piuze, a third-year pivot, completed 25 of 35 pass attempts and was picked off only once before giving way to understudy Maxime Sprauel in the final stanza. Sprauel was 4-for-6 passing for 22 yards and one interception.

The Carabins, known primarily for their rushing attack, completed passes to 14 different receivers in the game, led by Frank Bruno, a senior from Montreal, who hauled in seven balls for 93 yards and one TD. Bruno finished the day with 147 all-purpose yards, including 54 on kick returns.

Montreal opened the scoring at 6:47 of the first quarter when linebacker Jonathan Beaulieu-Richard of Trois-Rivieres, Que., pounced on a loose ball in the McGill endzone after a fumble by Jeff Thompson, who was attempting to return a missed 38-yard field-goal attempt by place-kicker Pierre-Paul Gelinas.

The Carabins extended their lead to 16-0 when Gelinas, a senior from Pointe Claire, Que., added field-goals, from distances of 14, 17 and 20 yards, respectively.

Nadeau-Piuze then found freshman Alexandre Dupuis of Montreal in the endzone for a 19-yard TD toss early in the final quarter to make the score 23-0.

McGill finally got on the scoreboard three minutes later when quarterback Ryne Bondy hooked up with Montrealer Michael Chitayat for a 10-yard TD pass. Chitayat finished with eight receptions for 90 yards.

Bondy, a junior from Richmond Hill, Ont., threw or a career-high 310 yards in a losing cause. He completed 21 of 44 passes and had one interception. His favourite receiver was Justene Edwards, a freshman from Hamilton, Ont., who snared five passes for 100 yards. McGill senior Charles-Antoine Sinotte was limited to only four catches for 57 yards, upping his career totals to a CIS record 244 receptions. With only two games remaining in his university career, Sinotte needs172 yards to break the QUFL all-time record held by Ottawas Chris Evraire.

The only other bright light for the Redmen was senior Ben Thompson, a star defensive lineman from Fredericton who registered a game-high 8.5 tackles, eight of them solos.

Montreal (5-2) plays host to the Concordia Stingers (3-4) next Friday, while McGill (0-7) will host Laval (6-0) on Saturday.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
