No. 8 Huskies avenge 2010 loss to Mounties with convincing 60-6 romp


(MONCTON, N.B.) – The CIS No. 8-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies handed the Mount Allison Mounties a 60-6 defeat at Moncton’s Rocky Stone Field Saturday afternoon in front of over 3,000 fans to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Major scoring for Saint Mary’s came from kicker Brett Lauther with 21 points (five field goals and six extra points), while Michael Dawes added two rushing touchdowns. Reigning AUS most outstanding player Jahmeek Taylor scored the first major of the game and added a 80-yard punt return for six points late in the third quarter. Jesse Mills and Melvin Abankwah contributed single touchdowns each.

Mounties’ kicker Alex Curtis accounted for Mount Allison’s scoring with his two field goals of 35 and 29 yards.

The leading rusher for the Huskies was Craig Leger with 129 yards on 14 carries. Mount Allison’s leader in the ground game was Emmanuel Musangu with 82 yards on 22 carries.
The Huskies dominated the passing game with Jesse Mills completing 14-of-19 attempts for 285 yards, while an injured Jake Hotchkiss completed four of eight passes for 51 yards in a losing effort.

Defensively, the Mounties were led by Sackville resident Justin Richard and Moncton’s Matt Kenny, who had game-high tackle totals of seven each, along with SMU’s Rob Jubenville.
Subway Players of the Game were Abankwah for the Huskies and Musangu for the Mounties.
The Huskies led 28-3 at the half and took the final 60-6.

The Mounties, now 0-3 on the season, are back in action next Saturday, October 1st when they travel to Antigonish to visit the St.FX X-Men. The following week the Mounties return home to host the Acadia Axemen on Saturday, October 8th at MacAulay Field in Sackville at 2:00 p.m.
