NS: Stakes High for Flames and Griffins

The Sir John A MacDonald Flames face another tough task this weekend.
The Flames (2-1) are set to take on the Horton Griffins(2-0-1) on Sunday night at Acadia Field in Wolfville. They have to find a way to poke holes through the top defensive line in the Nova Scota Student Athletic Federation League.

Reeling from a crushing defeat at the hands of the Citadel Phoenix, the Flames would like to get a confidence booster by rebounding with a win. The Griffins, on the other hand would like to remain undefeated, as the team is coming off a 23-23 tie with the Charles P Allen Cheetahs. Quarterback Matt Shannon will lead the charge for the Flames. Running back Justin Stevens is fine after last week’s game and will be in the line-up. As well, receivers Mark Gaudry, Ryan Murchison, Brandon Gorman and Michael Soley will try to rush the ball down the field.
On defense, players that will be key factors on the field include Nick Hartling, John Perrott, Nate Rostek, Nick Bartolacci, Chandler Tufts, Jamal Alhendal and rookie defensive tackle Shane Stonehouse. Also, linebacker Keith Langille is expected to contribute to the Flames effort on the field.

After last week’s game against the Phoenix, the Flames plan to improve on their offensive line and special teams play. Furthermore, the team hopes to play more disciplined football and protect the football. Finally, the Flames hope for better game execution and plan to be high pressure and relentless on the field.

As for the Griffins, they will be led by defensive end/full back Adam Melanson, running back Robert Adams and linebacker/wide receiver Will Stewart. Rookies expected to step up in this game include defensive end Jacob Melanson and wide receiver/running back Cam Davidson.

Head coach Alec Hyndman knows it won’t be easy either but says his team is ready for battle.

“If we come out strong and play mistake free, then we stand a good chance,” says Hyndman. “SJA is a great team, and it’s going to be a battle.”

The Griffins will look to their solid defense and running game in order to achieve success. Additionally, the team plans to continue with their ball control style on the field (clock and ball possession). Experience is a strong point for the Griffins, as they have a veteran filled squad who knows what it takes to win.

There is a lot at stake for both teams. It can impact the outcome of the season and the road to the playoffs.
“We have been looking forward to it,” says Hyndman. “This game could decide who finishes first in our division giving that team home field advantage in the playoffs.”
