NS: Week Four Roundup of NSSAFFL

Week four proved to be an intriguing one in Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League play (NSSAFFL).

Developments regarding the Sir John A MacDonald Flames football team affected their game play against the Horton Griffins. The Citadel Phoenix continued to steamroll their opponents, while a thriller took place at Lockview between the Dragons and the Prince Andrew Panthers.
Here are some results of NSSAFFL games this past week with highlights:

Horton Griffins 28 , Sir John AMacDonald Flames 0:

In the high school game of the week, it was the first game the Flames played after learning they would have to forfeit two wins for fielding an ineligible player. The Griffins top defensive line shut out the Flames at Acadia Field on Sunday night.

Defensive end/fullback Adam Melanson led the Griffins with two touchdowns (two one yard rushes) in the game and rushed for 71 yards on 10 carries. Melanson has three touchdowns this season.

Running back Robert Adams rushed for 266 yards on 32 carries and had one touchdown (57 yard rush). Adams now has 1103 yards on 110 carries and 10 touchdowns on the season.

Kicker Loic Adam made field goals from the 26 and 28 yard lines. However, he missed a 38 yard field goal attempt, but the Griffins were awarded a point.

On defense, Melanson had 11 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for the Griffins. Alex Thomas had an interception and a fumble recovery while linebacker Will Stewart had a sack and a forced fumble for the winning team.

Head coach of the Griffins Alec Hyndman says the offensive line was the key to the victory.

“They have been strong all year and work hard everyday to get even better,” says Hyndman. “We are averaging and little better than 350 yards per game on the ground.”
The Griffins are now 3-0-1 while the Flames are 0-4 in league play.

Prince AndrewPanthers 24, Lockview Dragons 23:

In the first half of the game at Lockview, Panthers quarterback RIley Potter and defensive back Dylan Cossar each had a touchdown and kicker Nate Skeete converted both times for the extra point. Panthers defense forced a safety for two points.

Fullback/linebacker Ian Melanson scored a touchdown on a defensive recovery run back in the second half of the game. Again, Skeete converted for the extra point; however, he missed a field goal attempt as the ball was kicked through the end zone. The Panthers did receive a point for the attempt.

Head coach for the Panthers, Joe Flemming says that Melanson stepped up for the team.

“Honourable mention goes out to Ian Melanson who played both ways tonight, made big plays when they were needed and scored what might have been the game changing TD on a defensive forced fumble recovery and ran it back for a touchdown,” comments Flemming.

Additionally, Flemming says that Cossar was strong special teams play and made several tackles in all directions of the field while Spencer Weichert stepped up and contributed with a strong effort and great play on the field.

With the win, the Panthers are now 3-1 while the Dragons drop to 1-3 in the league standings.

Citadel Phoenix 44,Halifax West Warriors 0:
Coming of a huge win against the Sir John A MacDonald Flames last week at Dalhousie Turf, the Phoenix had little difficulty against the Warriors.

In the game played last night at Saint Mary’s, Phoenix quarterback Derek Brown had a huge game as he passed for more than 400 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed in the end zone for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, wide receiver A’dre Fraser had five catches on the night for 135 yards and rushed in for two touchdowns. Ian Miller was a key as well as he has two catches for 109 yards and one touchdown. That touchdown was a 99 yard rush.

Defensive end Jordan Redding had another big game. He led the Phoenix defense with five tackles and a blocked punt.

With the win, the Phoenix remain undefeated with a 4-0 record while the Warriors drop to 1-2 in league play.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
