NS: Week Seven Roundup of NSSAFFL

Week seven action in the Nova Scotia Student Athletic Federation Football League saw the “must see” game result in a blowout.

The Charles P Allen Cheetahs routed the Prince Andrew Panthers in a duel under Friday night lights. As a result of the victory, the Cheetahs are in sole possession of second place in the Nova Division.

Many games this past week ended up being lopsided. The Sir John A MacDonald Flames continued to find their winning ways as they thrashed the Cole Harbour Cavaliers. Meanwhile, the Lockview Dragons made easy work of the Central Kings Gators. Additionally, the Dartmouth High Spartans had very little trouble with the Northeast Kings Education Centre Titans.

As for the Cobequid Education Centre Cougars, they manhandled the Auburn Drive Eagles. The Sackville High Kingsfishers got by the JLIlsley Judges. Finally this past week in the NSSFFL league ended with the Halifax West Warriors dispatching the Avon View Avalanche.

The tops two teams in the NASSFFL, the Citadel Phoenix and the Horton Griffins, had a bye this week along with the John Hugh Gillis Royals. Even with having a bye week, the Phoenix is still in first place with 12 points in the Nova Division and remains tops in the league. The Griffins lead the Scotia Division with 11 points. In each division, there is not that much space between all other teams in the standings. With only two weeks left of the regular season, it sets up great battles for playoff seeding and spots.

Here are some of the results from Week 7 action:

Charles P Allen Cheetahs 59, Prince Andrew Panthers 7:

It was all Cheetahs in the “must see” game of the week under Friday Night Lights at Burnside Turf. Running back Louis Stephen had a huge game for the victors as he rushed for 272 yards and had three touchdowns. Additionally, Stephen threw a touchdown pass on an option to receiver Jordan Koch.

Cheetahs’ linebacker Dustin MacCallum had another strong game as he rushed in the end zone for two touchdowns and had 9 tackles on defense. Receiver Alex Bayne and defensive back/running back Matt Ryan scored the other touchdowns. Defensive back Ian Archibald had two interceptions while defensive back Daniel Keays had one interception.

As for the Panthers, the team’s only score of the day came late in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Riley Potter connected with tailback Andrew Klain for a touchdown. Nate Skeete’s conversion attempt was successful for the Panthers.

With this victory, the Cheetahs are all alone in second place in the Nova Division with a 4-1-1 record and nine points. They are three points behind the Phoenix for the lead. Meanwhile, the Panthers fall to 3-3-0 with the loss and are now tied for third in the division with the Warriors and have six points. Next opponent for the Cheetahs is the Titans on Sunday afternoon in Canning while the Panthers will play the Avalanche on Thursday evening at Burnside Turf.

Dartmouth High Spartans 55, Northeast Kings Education Centre Titans 3:

In Canning on Saturday afternoon, the Spartans had little trouble with the Titans. The Spartans handed the Titans their first loss in seven home games. At halftime, the team led 28-3 and never looked back. Spartans quarterback Cody Cluett threw for 303 total passing yards.

Defensive back/slot back De’Shawn States had three touchdowns on the day, including two which came on punt returns. Other players to score touchdowns for the Spartans include running back Josh Gallant, wide receiver Andrew Viera, running back Julien Rogers, defensive end/wide receiver Shivase Reddick and slot back Ashton Slawter.

Meanwhile for the Titans, quarterback Dylan DeGraaf ran for 101 yards and threw for 78 passing yards. The only score for the team in the game was a field goal from Josh Fogarty.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 4-2-0. The team is in a tie for third place in the Nova Division with 8 points with the Dragons and only sits one point behind the Cheetahs for second place. As for the Titans, they are now 2-4-0 with four points. They currently sit in fifth place in the division. Next opponent for the Spartans will be the Warriors on Sunday evening at Burnside Turf while the Titans will play Titans take on the Cheetahs in the afternoon in Canning.

Sackville High Kingfishers 28, JL Ilsley Judges 16:

At Rockingstone Field on Sunday afternoon, the Kingfishers topped the Judges. Kingfishers running back Dustin Brogaard led the team as he scored three touchdowns and ran for 238 yards. The other touchdown for the Kingfishers was scored by Connor Leblanc.

As for the Judges, Connor Miller caught a 13 yard pass for a touchdown. Martin Clayton led the Judges by running for 193 yards on 13 carries and ran into the end zone once.

As a result of this victory, the Kingsfishers now move into sole possession of second place in the Scotia division with a 4-2-0 record and eight points. The team is only three points behind the Griffins for first and has a two point lead on three teams for that second place spot. With the loss, the Judges drop to 1-5-0 and are in fifth place in the division with two points.
Next up for the Kingfishers is a match up against the Cavaliers on Friday evening at Burnside Turf, while the Judges will go to Sir John A to face the Flames on Sunday afternoon.

Cobequid Education Centre Cougars 40, Auburn Drive Eagles 0:

On Sunday afternoon in Truro, the Cougars dismantled the Eagles. The team was led by quarterback Gab Bagnell who had 13 completions on 20 attempts and 228 passing yards. Cougars running back Brett Johnson was unstoppable as he had three touchdowns on the day and ran for 111 yards on 16 carries.

Cougars receiver Trevor Blaauwendraat had five carries for 81 yards and ran into the end zone once while Matt Waterman had 84 yards on five catches. Also offensively for the Cheetahs, receiver Stefan Boudreau caught an eight yard pass, good enough to score a touchdown. Defensively for the Cougars, linebacker Calder Saunders had eight tackles and one sack while defensive back Luc Lavers had six tackles and had one fumble recovery.

With this win, the Cougars are 3-3-0. The Eagles are also 3-3-0 with the loss. Both teams are tied with the Royals for third place in the Scotia Division with six points. The Cougars will now face the Royals on Saturday night at John Hugh Gillis. With sole possession of third place on the line, this will be a great showdown between the two teams. Meanwhile, the Eagles take on the Griffins on Sunday afternoon at Burnside Turf.

Halifax West Warriors 29, Avon View Avalanche 6:

At Mainland Commons on Sunday afternoon, the Warriors had little trouble with the Avalanche. Quarterback Scott Borden led the Warriors on the field. He was 20 for 31 and had 284 passing yards for four touchdowns.

Receiver Erdat Loshi had a big day for the Warriors as he scored two touchdowns and 69 yards on five receptions. The other touchdowns were scored by receivers Gavin Quigley (2 receptions for 32 yards) and Allan MacLeod (25 yard reception). Warriors receiver Kyle Harris had seven receptions for 77 yards and running back Zack Sellars had 16 carries for 73 yards, and 35 yard reception.

The Warriors improve to 3-3-0 on the season and are tied with the Panthers for fourth place in theNova Division with six points. As for the Avalanche, their season record is 4-2-0 and they have eight points. The Avalanche is in an independent division and has improved significantly from last season’s record of 0-8-0. The team is one of the pleasant surprises this season in the NSSAFFL.

Next up for the Warriors is a game against the Spartans at Burnside Turf on Sunday evening while the Avalanche takes on the Panthers on Thursday night at Burnside Turf.

Sir John A MacDonald Flames 64, Cole Harbour High Cavaliers 0:

The Flames withstood terrible weather conditions on Thursday night at Burnside Turf to thrash the Cavaliers. Play by play game statistics were unable to be recorded from this game.

With the victory, the Flames are now 2-4-0 and sit in fourth place in the Scotia division with four points. The Cavaliers are still winless this season and are last place in the Scotia Division. This week the Flames will play at home against the Judges on Sunday afternoon while the Cavaliers take on the Kingfishers on Friday evening at Burnside Turf.

Lockview Dragons 69, Central Kings Gators 0:

On Friday night at Acadia, the Dragons dispatched the Gators. No play by play or game results were available.

The Dragons improve to 4-3-0 and are tied for third place in the Nova Division along with the Spartans with eight points. Meanwhile, the Gators have yet to win a game this season and are in last place in the Nova Division with a 0-6-0 record.
A tough task is athand for the Gators to try to get their first win this week as they face thePhoenix in a Sunday late morning game in Canning. The Dragons have a bye this week.
