NSVFL: Island Well Drilling Drillers bounce back for 2nd week shutout victory


Island Well Drilling Drillers Win in Nova Scotia Junior Varsity Football action – Week 2
The Cape Breton Island Well Drilling Drillers rebounded in week two of the Nova Scotia Jr. Varsity league action with a convincing 42-0 victory over the Valley Wardogs played Sunday at Oland Stadium on the St. FX campus in Antigonish.



The Drillers opened the scoring in the first quarter with quarterback Brandon Buckingham connecting on a 7 yard pass with slotback Nick walsh for the major, Keaton Fougere converted for 7-0 first quarter lead. In the second quarter halfback Sam Demone broke a tackle and scampered 25 yards and with a Fougere convert upped the Drillers score to 14-0 which stood as the half time total.


The Cape Bretoners continued their scoring onslaught in the third quarter when Walsh from the free safety position picked off a Valley pass and returned it 45 yards for the touchdown, also in the third Walsh again hauled in a Buckingham pass from the one to score his third major of the day and end the quarter with the Drillers up 28-0. In the final quarter Demone added his second of the day with a 46 yard dash to the end zone, while defensive end Taylor Morrison completed the scoring for the day when he recovered a Valley fumble in the end zone to make the final 42-0 Drillers. On defence for the Drillers line backer Mike MacMillan chipped in with 5 tackle while defensive end Jordan Hart finished with 4. The Drillers have a bye this week and will be back in action May 29th in Antigonish with a 1:30 tilt against the Halifax Seahawks.

The Cape Breton Island Well Drilling Drillers opened their inaugural Jr. Varsity under 17 football season with a 25-0 lose to a strong Dartmouth Destroyers squad in NSJVL action played Sunday in Antigonish at Olands Stadium St. FX. Dartmouth opened the scoring in the first quarter with quarterback Cody Cluett scrambling in from the 5 yard line for a major, convert was blocked, Dartmouth continued putting points on the board in the first with wideout Shawn States scoring on a 15 yard reverse again the Drillers blocked the convert.

The Destroyers added to their lead in the second quarter with tail back Tyler Gibson making a dazzling 21 yard run to finish the scoring for a half time lead of 18-0. The teams traded field position in the third quarter until return man Rylie Potter returned a Drillers punt 58 yards for the halfs only touchdown. For the Drillers quarterback Brandon Buckingham had a stellar day completing 12 passes for 156 yards with slotback Nick Walsh hauling in 4 for 65 yards, defensively end Taylor Morrison had 2 sacks and 2 tackles. The Drillers will be back in action next Sunday hosting the Valley Wardogs for a 1:30 start at the St.FX field.
