OFC: Bantam Stampeders hold on against Peterborough


Bantams tied for first in bantam division
The 2-2 Burlington bantam Stampeders faced the 3-1 first place Peterborough Wolverines and walked away with a 23 – 21 win.

On Burlington’s first offence possession of the game quarterback Jacob Racco handed the ball off to Andrew Pipilas who scored on a 55 yard run. Matthew Walker’s point after was good. Burlington continued to dominate with Matthew Walker kicking a field goal to start the second quarter. Jacob Racco connected with Pipilas, who ran for a 60 yard touchdown and the point after by Matthew Walker was good. Both defences came out strong after the half with neither team scoring. Burlington scored on the first play of the fourth quarter on seven- yard run from Dominic Mandalfino.

Peterborough then answered with 3 touchdowns in the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] quarter. Braden Frise scored on a 30 yard run and again with a five yard scramble. Peterborough kicked and scored a two point covert respectively. Late in the game Johnny Watson scored on a 20 yard run.

The entire defence was strong again for Burlington. Mike Choma led with ten tackles, followed by Jack Miller with eight and Nicky Drolet and Aaron Gustafson with 6 each. Josh Chedore had five tackles and returned two punts for a total of 14 yards.

β€œWe played a good game on both sides of the ball” said Stampeder head coach Cliff Bruce β€œPeterborough is a good team and we relaxed a little late and let them creep back into it , we need a similar effort going forward into our next game”

With this win Burlington moves into a five way tie for first place in the OFC Bantam Division. They travel to Chatham next week to face the Cougars (2-1), kick off at 6:30 at Chatham Kent Secondary School.

It will be a long day for the Stampeders next week when they travel to Chatham next Sunday for a tripleheader beginning with the varsity teams.
