Official: Joe D’Amore appointed Lancer interim head coach

Gord Grace, Director of Athletics at the University of Windsor is pleased to announce the hiring of Joe D’Amore as the interim head coach of the Lancer Football program. The appointment is effective immediately.

The Windsor, Ontario native spent the past season as the recruiting coordinator and lead assistant coach for the Lancers.

“I am pleased to name Joe as our interim head football coach, commented Gord Grace. “He has made a solid impact with the football program thus far and we believe he is the right person to lead the team next season.”

Grace expects to hire a permanent head coach for the football program following the 2011 fall season.

D’Amore replaces Mike Morencie who was the third head coach in the Lancers’ 42-year-history and led the team for the past 13 years. During his time at Windsor, Morencie successfully sent six players into the Canadian Football League.

Dr. Bob Boucher, Dean of the Faculty of Human Kinetics said, “Mike has always been very committed to the University of Windsor and to our football players. I would like to thank him for his years of dedication to the football program and wish him the best in his future endeavours.”

D’Amore joined the Lancers last year, and previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Essex Ravens in the Ontario Varsity Football League since 2007. With the Ravens, he has also worked as a special teams coordinator and the defensive backs coach.

I am really excited to have the chance to carry the program forward,” commented D’Amore. We have a lot of young and developing talent and I’m excited for the opportunity to help the team grow in 2011.

He expects to name his coaching staff in the coming weeks.

D’Amore is no stranger to local high school football where he was the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the Villanova Wildcats two years ago. Before that, he was the Head Coach for two years with the Sandwich HS Sabres.

He is best known for his playing career at the University of Windsor. He played for the Lancers from 1996-2000 as a wide receiver and started all 40 games of his career. He was also the team captain for the Lancers for three seasons.

Following his playing career, Joe moved on to play professional football in the Arena Football League (AFL2) with the Carolina Rhinos. He also played two seasons with the Fursty Razorbacks in the German Football League in Munich, Germany.

He broke into the coaching ranks in 2000 when he worked as a Graduate Assistant with the Lancer Football program.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
