OL Hacker likes “being the deciding factor in a game”

TJ Hacker has been battling against opposing linemen for the past six years in a sport that’s his “biggest passion.” He has competed for the L’Essor Aigles and the Essex Ravens.

“I spend a lot of time around the game, and it has become a big part of life and the person I am today,” he says.

There are a few reasons why he enjoys playing on the O-line.

“What I like about playing O-line is being the deciding factor in a game,” TJ says. “Also being the person the team is always relying on, day in and day out. And I kind of like not being the centre of attention on the team, being the guy in the background pulling the strings.”

When it comes to the recruitment process, he has decided not to put all his eggs in one basket.

“I have not committed to any schools yet,” he says. “My top 3 choices would be Windsor because they are the local team that everyone in the region supports. Second, Western because they have a great football tradition and are a powerhouse. I don’t really have a third team in mind currently; I’m keeping more of an open mind on the third one.”

Influential figures are vital for athletes and TJ is no different.

“The people who have influenced my life and football career the most have been my coaches, teammates and parents,” TJ says. “Without my coaches and teammates to help me push myself and learn, and without the help and support of my parents, I would not be able to do anything I am doing now.”

One of his favourite players growing up was Brian Dawkins “because of his intensity and love for the game.”

He knows the steps he has to take to enhance his overall repertoire. “I plan on going to the gym very often to improve physically and plan on playing summer football with the Essex Ravens to improve even more,” he says.

His future plans include playing football for as long as he can, and he thinks he’ll “adjust well to the next level.”

“I find I have all skills and credentials necessary to make a smooth adjustment, like an open mind, a willingness to learn and effort.”
