OMFL: Lions squeak out victory thanks to Gibner ‘pick six’

The Jr. Varsity Cambridge Lions of the OMFL won a tough defensive game 8-7 against the Mississauga Warriors Saturday. The win gives the Lions a 4-2 record heading into the last month of the season.

Cambridge’s defense was led by five interceptions, three by Tyler Gibner, and one each by Brandon Payne and Brady Bartlett.

Gibner had the only score, going end end after an end-zone interception that he returned 112 yards.

Thomas O’Leary added the extra point.

With just over five minutes left, Payne intercepted the ball, and Cambridge’s offense drove down the field eating the clock. O’Leary punted through the end-zone for a single point with 9.5 seconds left to finish the drive.

Mississauga took the ball on the 35 yard line after the punt and Mississauga attempted a deep throw to get themselves in single point range, but Gibner intercepted the ball to finish the game.

The Lions next game is against the Niagara Spears Saturday morning in Grimsby.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
