ONT (Guelph District 10) semifinals: Crusaders’ revenge, Royals win in overtime

The semifinal round of Guelph District 10 football showcased two great match-ups as John F Ross Royals and St. James Lions required overtime while Our Lady of Lourdes Crusaders attempted to hand GCVI Gaels their first loss of the season.
The first game had the St. James Lions and the John F Ross Royals square off on Hallowe’en in a rematch of last year’s semifinal. Last year, the Royals were able to edge the Lions in overtime, and this time was no different asĀ Dominic Janus kicked the game winning field goal in overtime to seal the Royals’ trip to the finals, winning by a score of 10-7. The game was played in intense rain and a Lions fumble in overtime allowed the Royals to drive and Ā set up the winning field goal. The Royals have reached the Guelph District 10 final for three consecutive years, and will attempt to make it their third championship in as many years.

In another semifinal rematch ,the Our Lady of Lourdes Crusaders played the GCVI Gaels on Friday night at the University of Guelph’s Alumni Stadium. After being eliminated by the Gaels the previous year, the Crusaders managed to reverse the tides, winning 21-12 under a gloomy November sky. CFC TOP 100 playerĀ Nick Parisotto continued what has been a stellar 2013 campaign, finding the end zone twice in the winning effort. The Gaels have to be disappointed after finishing the regular season a perfect 4-0, including a week one win over the Crusaders.

The stage is set for a high powered final between the defending champion Royals and the challenger, the Crusaders. The two teams account for six previous Guelph District 10 championships with each team winning three. The game will be played Friday, November 8th at Alumni Field. Kickoff is set for 7pm.
