ONT (WCSSAA): CFC #14 Phoenix continue its rise

After four weeks of play in WCSSAA play (Waterloo Region), we can finally real who’s for real, who’s not, and who can maybe make a run. There were plenty of key match ups and close games this week. Let’s look what happened

Resurrection Phoenix 35, Sir John A Macdonald Highlanders 10

CFC Top 50 Resurrection Phoenix were calling this match up a true “test” to see where they lined up against one of the league’s best, and two time-defending champion, Sir John A MacDonald.

Any questions about how good Resurrection was were quickly thrown away. Phoenix jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead and in the dying minutes of the first half piled on two more majors to have a five-score lead at half.

Once again, receiver Marcus Joseph was dynamic. He found the end zone three times giving him 9 TDs in only four games.

Preston Panthers 34, Waterloo Vikings 26

The Panthers finally found the win column. After losing back-to-back extremely tight games, Preston High School was powered by a huge first half en route the victory.

Preston quickly jumped out to a 21-3 lead early in the third quarter after returning a missed kick for a major.

But Waterloo jumped back out front by scoring 19 unanswered thanks to three TDs from Mitch Hensel.

However, the Panthers rebounded in the fourth quarter with two rushing touchdowns of their own to finally grab the win.

Southwood Sabres 35, Huron Heights Huskies 14

After a convincing 38-13 win over KCI last week, the Huskies stumbled out of the gate and could not recover.
It was the first loss of the year for Huron Heights while the Sabres improved to 2-0.

Mitch Talbot (picture) and Braeden Ralph had two touchdowns for Southwood.

Huskies head coach Aaron Holmes said his young team had a tough time getting up for the contest.

“We had a good drive offensively to start the game and then fumbled the snap on a QB keeper on 3rd and inches on their 40 yard line.  That was our first turnover this year and the boys didn’t respond well to it.  We have a young squad and their
inexperience showed,” he says.

Even though he lost, coach Holmes says there are still some positives to take away – especially from the younger players.

“We had some young Grade 11’s step up in the game when veterans weren’t getting it done, and they showed great competitiveness and drive,” he says.

Southwood looks to stay unbeaten vs. St. David next week while the Huskies will take on a winless Monsignor Doyle side.

St. Benedict Saints 35, Eastwood Rebels 6

It’s not shocking that the Saints beat an undefeated Eastwood side – St. Benedict is one of the top teams in the “A” division. It’s how they did it.

Heading into this match up – Eastwood had only allowed a single point in three games. Today, the Saints offense upended the brilliant Eastwood Defense.

“On offence I don’t think they were expecting our passing game so that might have caught them off guard,” says Saints head coach Robert Lowes.

The Saints got off to a flying start. Offensive star George Monaghan returned the opening kick-off 95 yards to help settle them into the game.

Lowe says the defense was also impressive.

“When you play Eastwood you know that they are a very strong running team so we made some personnel adjustments that certainly helped slow down their running game,” he says.

St. Benedict takes on Cameron Heights next week while Eastwood has a chance to make a huge statement when they play CFC Top 50 Jacob Hespeler.

 Jacob Hespeler Hawks 68, St. Mary’s Eagles 0

 Another week, and another dominating win for the Hawks. They remain unbeaten on the season.

James Roberts and Kieran Burnham found the endzone twice while Carlton Smith continued his impressive start to the season with a three touchdown performance.

The CFC Top 50 Hawks look untouchable. If there is any chance of a team bringing them down, it will be when Eastwood takes on mighty Jacob Hespeler next week.

St. Benedict Saints 39, Preston Panthers 0

Seven different Saints found the score sheet in a solid all-around performance from St. Benedict’s.

The Saints now sit a top the “C” division with a 3-1 record. This was a golden opportunity for the previously undefeated Panthers to grab a stranglehold of the division.

Waterloo Vikings 13, Kitchener-Waterloo Raiders 7

The battle of two 1-1 teams ended in a close defensive win for the Vikings.

Jacob Witmer had two touchdowns for Waterloo and that proved to be the difference.

Waterloo climbs the standings, while the Raiders drop near the bottom.

Sir John A. MacDonald Highlanders 30, Resurrection Phoenix 14

 Both teams were desperate to remain on top of the table as two undefeated teams (3-0) squared off against each other.

In the end, it was Sir. John A. MacDonald who kept the perfect season alive, improving to 4-0 with a 30-14 win over their conference rival.

Condrad Hendon had a dominating performance for the Highlanders scoring two TDs as Sir John A. MacDonald proved to be too much for Resurrection.

Eastwood Rebels 44, Huron Heights 7

 Ahmed Kanu continued his strong play for Eastwood by scoring 3 TDs en route to a thumping of Huron Heights.

Elvis Sanchez also scored twice for the Rebels.
