ONT (WCSSAA) Week 3: Lancers need double overtime to bypass Panthers

Week 3 is done and it was another close battle between all teams in the WCSSAA. Here is a look at a couple of games from the past week. All teams have a chance to go all the way and these close games so far are proof that anyone could take that first place spot this season.

Elmira Lancers 12, Preston Panthers 11(Double OT)

The closest game of the season so far saw the Preston Panthers up against the Elmira Lancers. This game came down to the battle of the better defense this week. Elmira came out victorious in the final play of the second overtime. Elmira was able to kick a rouge to give them a one point victory. Preston had a few key plays in this game keeping them close right until the end. Kicker Tyler Wismer kicked a 43 yards field goal with 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

“We had an excellent opportunity to win in the first OT as our defense held Elmira scoreless,” said Panthers Head Coach Jim Crone.   “Unfortunately we missed opportunity as we fumbled the ball on second down.”
With such a low scoring game, it’s clear to see that both teams possess very strong defenses and Preston will be looking to rebound next week with a decisive victory.

Sir John A MacDonald Highlanders 17, Bluevale Knights 3

Sir John A MacDonald had a fantastic game this week as they were able to effectively score, while stopping Bluevale nearly every time. Each week, the Highlanders have had an incredible run game and week 3 was no exception. Mike Lynch carried the ball 23 times for a total of 117 yards and a touchdown.

“ Our defense really came to play in this game holding the Bluevale offense to just 3 points,” said Highlanders Head Coach Josh Alexander.  “A great all around day from a young unit that is stepping up and improving each week.”

The defense had a handful of standout players including defensive back Eisa Azhar and free safety Nick Hehl who both came away with interceptions this week. Defensive end Jake McGill also helped the D with a crucial sack this game.

Coach Alexander was impressed with the team’s performance in the game.

“We are a young football team working harder than ever. Players are starting to step up and make plays,” said Alexander.  “It was great to see both the hard work of these young men pay off in a victory as well as seeing everyone on our team get in the game.”

Next week is a true test for Sir John A MacDonald.

“We battle cross town rival Resurrection; this will be a great opportunity to see where we are heading into post season play,” said Alexander.

Coach Alexander is optimistic about his young team and sees a bright future for them if they continue to come together as a unit.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
