ONT (WECSSAA) Preview: “It should be a game for the ages”

The Battle of Windsor takes centre stage this weekend and it will not disappoint.  Two CFC TOP 50 and undefeated 3-0 squads will duke it out on the field as the Herman Green Griffins will visits Holy Names Knights.  Not only is sole possession of first place at stake but pride and honour are at stake for both these teams.

Both football programs have solidified themselves as perennial powerhouses over the past decade and tomorrow will mark another chapter in this rivalry. The last time these two teams met was in the finals on November 15th, 2012, when the Green Griffins defeated the Knights 35-27 en route to winning the Western Bowl.

Making a statement in this game will be a focal point for both teams in this epic matchup.

“The hype about this game is ridiculous,” said Knights defensive back Malcolm Thompson.  His teammate and starting quarterback Anthony Bontorin agreed.

“We are both trying to keep our unbeaten streaks alive and really make a statement on whose the top team this year,” explained Bontorin.

Thompson explained why this is the must see game of the week, not only in Windsor, but in the province.

“Everybody in the city of Windsor wants to see this game because of the constant rivalry between us,” expressed Thompson.  High school students and just people around Windsor are looking forward to this matchup.”

“Holy Names High and Herman are always at the top of football in the city of Windsor, we both have great programs and coaches. “

While Thompson is viewing this as just another regular season game, he cannot deny the intensity this match will bring on Friday and is focused on the task at hand.

“To me this game is like any other game this season, we just need to play our ‘A’ game,” explained the Knights defensive back.  “However this game is more intense because every year in high school, I have lost to Herman in the championship.”

“Every game we play is always close and it is always great. This is a game that I will not let us lose. I am confident with my team.”

For Bontorin, this is the only game he’s ever been familiar with his entire life and the team has redemption on their minds.  Ultimately, the Knights would like come out on top in front of many spectators.

“This game between Holy Names and Herman has been a rivalry game ever since I’ve known about the two schools,” commented the Knights pivot.  “Holy Names and Herman have been the two power houses in the last decade when it comes to high school football and we always seem to meet in the finals.”

“This year we get a chance to face Herman during the regular season and this doesn’t take away any meaning. Herman has gotten the better of us in the last two WECSSAA Finals and we are very determined this year to not only take this game on Friday but face them in the finals and dominate them there as well.  We are expecting more than 2000 fans for this game on Friday and it should be a game for the ages.”

Ultimately, this game will be an emotionally charged affair with both teams reigniting a timeless rivalry.
