Ontario (Golden Horseshoe): MM Robinson strikes first in Ohio

The MM Robinson High School senior football team scored first in a preseason exhibition game against the Hubbard, Ohio high school team in a Friday night lights game September 7. The Rams led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter however the Eagles was able to adjust their strategy scoring 21 unanswered points leading to a final score 35-23. The Hubbard team is undefeated and this score was as close as their game in Cleveland last week.
Running back Jon Howard score first on a 44 yard touchdown run just 90 seconds into the game in front of a stunned hometown crowd. The Eagles regrouped and blocked the point after kick. The Hubbard team scored four minutes later and the Rams settled for a field goal the first quarter with the lead.

Hubbard scored again three minutes into the second, and again 30 seconds later after a fumble recovery to make the score 21-9 at half time.

Head coach Marcello Campanaro who won coaching awards for the 2011 season from T Litzen and HSSAA and his coaching staff inspiredĀ Ā the team at half time. Neither team scored again until eight minutes into the third when Hubbard put up points. Jacob Jones caught a ten-yard,Troy Downton touch down pass with under a minute left in the third. Hubbard answered back on their next possession. Jones caught another pass in the end zone four minute into the fourth to finish the scoring.

Jones caught ten Downton passes for two TDs and 185 yards. Jack Woolfrey caught two for 36 yards and had seven carries for 59 yards. Howard had 184 yards on the ground and Downton scrambled for 18 when he kept the ball. O lineman Ryan Price ensured the Eagles didnā€™t score when he was on the field, tackling the two Hubbard fumble recoveries and one interception featured on the Hubbard 11 oā€™clock news. Linebacker Chad Taylor led the defence with ten tackles. Troy Murphy had seven and Alec Robertson six more.

The game was a regular season, out-of-conference game for HubbardĀ Ā although an exhibition match to warm up for the Halton Secondary School Athletics AssociationĀ Ā season which kicks off this week. The Rams will face the Holy Trinity Titans this Friday in Oakville at 3:30pm One former Stampeder and high school coach has predicted that the Rams will win the championship this year.
