Ontario High School Football: Optimism as tentative deal struck

This morning, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) announced that an agreement has been reached between the Provincial Government of Ontario and public school board.

In a press release, it stated that The agreement came to fruition on Wednesday as both sides came back to the bargaining table.

It still has to be ratified by local union chapters which have 60,000 members that belong to OSSTF. Β The OSSTF has indicated in the press release that the leaders will get together later this week to review the agreement.

Last week, CanadaFootballChat.com released an article about the implications of a deal not being reached. Overall, there was the prospect that gridiron players may not see high school football in the fall and for senior players, it could affect their chances to be recruited by CIS/NCAA teams. Β

OUA teams were also faced with the possibility of either accelerating recruitment strategies in the summer or finding additional avenues to recruit players in the fall in the event no high school football would be played,

Back in July, the OSSTF suspended all extra-curricular activities (football was included).

With a tentative deal in place, there is optimism that high school football will happen after all this fall in Ontario.

As for the Catholic School Board, the group is still negotiating with the Provincial Government of Ontario.
