Ontario kicker becomes Stingers first 2016 commitment

Port Stanley kicker joins RSEQ team’s 2016 class.

Concordia Stingers have gone out of province for their first commitment of their 2016 recruitment drive.

This past Sunday, the Stingers introduced Andrew Stevens as the newest member of the football program.  The kicker from Port Stanley, Ontario will join the Stingers for the 2016 RSEQ season.

For his part, Stevens is looking forward to working with the Stingers coaching staff.

“Concordia is a great university,” explained Stevens.  “It has a terrific Head Football Coach Mickey Donovan.”

“His football program is second to none and both Patrick Donovan, Mickey’s brother, and the Kicking Coach, Andrew Sutherland make you feel like a valued part of the Concordia football program.”

Moreover, the Ontario kicker was hooked instantaneously on the Quebec school once he arrived there for his official visit.

“I feel that they truly care about their athletes and we aren’t just a number on a jersey,” added Stevens.  “From the second you step on campus, you can feel the difference from other universities.”

“Coaches easily approached me with hellos and pats on the back. They know all the boys by name and I wanted to be a part of this well run program.”

The recent winning ways of the Stingers solidified to Stevens that it was the perfect place for him to begin the next chapter of his CIS career.

“After visiting the university, the athletic Department and watching a huge win against Bishop’s University (63-0) and then last Saturday’s win against McGill, where the kicker, Keegan [Treloar] won it with a field goal; I knew Concordia was the university for me.”

Currently, the kicker is completing his final season with St. Joseph Rams of the Thames Valley Regional Athletic Association (TVRAA).  Not only has he excelled on the gridiron, but Stevens is an established soccer player helping the Rams win the Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (WOSSAA) Championship last year.

“I would encourage any prospective player to look to Concordia where you a person/student first, then a player,” expressed Stevens.
