Ontario (Peel): d’Youville Panthers Claw the Notre Dame Knights

On Friday afternoon the d’Youville Panthers earned a hard fought victory over the defending ROPSSAA champs.
Ā

Notre Dame opened up the game with a strong defensive stance against d’Youville’s double wing offense. The Panthers were forced to punt the ball early.

On Notre Dame’s first offensive possession they surprisingly gave d’Youville a taste of their own medicine by running their own version of the double wing offense. At first the Knights were very successful running for three first downs.Ā Ā d’Youville quickly adjusted their defense to put a stop to their running game.

The Panthers opened up the scoring with two huge runs by FB Damian Halstead, who scored d’Youville’s only touchdown of the game.Ā Ā The extra point was no good.

d’Youville’s defense was solid with some big tackles from linebackers Marcel Ugoh, Darnell Downey, Jonas Venne, and Damian Halstead.Ā Ā The offense added a 36-yard field goal by kicker Emmanuel Esho.Ā Ā The Panthers were leading 9-0 at the half.

In the second half Notre Dame reverted back to a more conventional Canadian spread offense.Ā Ā They were successful at times but d’Youville’s defensive line was relentless.

d’Youville’s kicker Emmanuel Esho padded the lead with two more huge field goals from 41 and 43 yards away.

In the late fourth quarter Notre Dame Safety Bamki Adewale picked off a d’Youville pass and took it back to the house for 6 points.Ā Ā The extra point was blocked by NT Donovan Glave.

d’Youville safety Shavown Gregory answered back with two huge interceptions of his own in key moments of the game, which secured the win for the Panthers.

The Panthers are now 3-0 in exhibition play, and 1-0 in their tier 1 Peel season. They host the Mayfield Mavericks at home next Friday at 2:15pm.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
