Ontario player going out east, commits to MTA

Mount Allison adds their first 2017 commit to their team.

Cayne Lander, a defensive lineman from St. Andrew’s College, will feel right at home in the small town of Sackville, New Brunswick, which will be his new home after signing his letter of intent with the Mount Allison Mounties.

Lander will have a long way to go to reach Mount Allison University. The 6’0, 260lbs football player is coming from Sharon, Ontario, a small community north of Newmarket. But, since his trip to the east coast in 2012, he said he has felt like he belongs out there.

“Mount Allison is a small, personal school that will challenge me to be the best person I can on and off the field, as well as in the classroom,” he said of his new school. The young football player is interested in going into psychology.

The east coast may have caught his eye, but it was the coaches that solidified Lander’s decision to commit to Mount Allison. “Coach Brady and his staff have been very helpful through this entire process. They’ve created a great relationship with my parents and I, and we feel as though they believe in me as a player,” he said.

“I am beyond excited to work with them over the next five years,” he added.

Lander has been playing football since grade nine, starting with the St. Andrew’s College Saints (Conference of Independent Schools Athletics Association). He has played for five seasons, including three seasons with the Newmarket Bucs (the current York Region Lions) in the Ontario Varsity Football League. In 2014, he was named as the Bucs defensive MVP. This Wednesday, he will be competing in his first ever championship game with the Saints versus Upper Canada College.
