The second game on the slate for this year’s OPC was the BARON RINGS “underclassmen” game featuring the top 13 and 14 year-olds. The format would remain the same for all the games with Team Central representing the GTA east/north (Ottawa, SSM, etc.) and Team West (Hamilton, London, etc.). The first game did not disappoint as offences shined early, followed by a display of defensive might. The BARON RINGS Underclassmen game was much closer than the final score of 34-18 might indicate, as Team West pulled away late. Much like the first game the folks responsible for choosing the MVPs for this game would have their hands full, as many young stars rose their game and either made a name for themselves or continued to build on their existing status as “players to watch”.

Probably the performance of the day was turned in by Team Central linemen and Peterborough native Cameron Gilmore #31. Identified almost immediately by Team Central bench boss “Bubba” Allen as a player to watch, Gilmore continually showed why he jumped out at coaches in the initial tryout and displayed that “never ending motor” that coached raved about. Although named Defensive MVP, in this writer’s humble opinion, Gilmore could have easily been “Player of the day”.

On the offensive side of the ball there were several standouts, Adam Krantz with his electrifying catches and runs, Jaden Bailey, looking like a modern day Eric Dickerson using power and speed to blow past defenders and Kurtis Rourke playing point man to an explosive Team West offense. QB Will Hunter and RB Keon Edwards delivered a spark for the Team Central. In the end, one could have made a case for several different players but QB Kurtis Rourke #13 was the offensive MVP and Jaden Bailey took home the MVP honours.
