RECAP: Wendel, Gee Gees defeat No.9 Gaels in last minute (stats)

KINGSTON, Ont  – The No.9 Queen’s Gaels were defeated in Saturday afternoon’s tilt 37-30 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Richardson Stadium.

Queen’s battled back from a 14-point deficit in the first quarter to take a 30-16 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 30-yard field goal from Dillon Wamsley (London, Ont.), but then the Gaels offence ground to a halt.

Quarterback Derek Wendel put the Gee-Gees on his back, mounting a fourth quarter comeback for Ottawa. A 75-yard drive, capped off by a Wendel toss to Ian Stewart, kick-started the Gee-Gees offence once again and narrowed the score to 23-30.

After Wendel connected with Mack Tommy to tie the game with three minutes left, Tommy punched the ball in from two yards out with just 16 seconds on the clock to put the Gee-Gees ahead for good.

When the game was knotted was knotted 30-30, the Gaels were marching down the field, looking to take the lead. Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) hit Curis Carmichael (Scarborough, Ont.) on a pass that would have resulted in a first down, but the Gee-Gees stripped Carmichael of the ball to gain possession, which led Ottawa’s final score.

McPhee finished the game with over 300 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Jonah Pataki(Wallaceburg, Ont.) caught one of McPhee’s touchdown throws and added another score on the ground, where he ran for 157 yards. Carmichael was the Gaels go-to receiver on Saturday, with a game-high 134 yards on eight receptions, plus a touchdown. Alex Carroll (Victoria) also had over 100 yards receiving for Queen’s on seven catches.

The Gaels are back at Richardson Stadium next weekend to host the No.3 Western Mustangs at 1pm on Saturday.
