Ottawa first to pilot Safe Contact symposium

Football Canada in partnership with the Ontario Football Alliance and the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) are piloting the first Safe Contact symposium stop to be held Friday, June 21 through Saturday, June 22 at the RA Centre (2451 Riverside Drive) in Ottawa, Ontario. The Safe Contact symposium aims to educate players, coaches and parents alike on the latest National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Safe Contact tackling and blocking techniques.ā€œWeā€™ve taken a proactive, 360 degree approach to Safe Contact in an effort to educate not only the coaches and players but also the parents who are critical in the process,ā€ said Football Canada Director of Sport, Rick Sowieta.

Coaches are trained in the new Safe Contact techniques on Friday night and on Saturday they train their players while being evaluated on the material they learned the previous day.

ā€œWeā€™ve also included the parents on Saturday to help them better understand the new techniques, receiving information regarding concussion awareness and return to play protocol in addition to Football Canadaā€™s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model,ā€ explained Football Canada Technical Coordinator, Aaron Geisler.

ā€œIf successful, weā€™d like to take this approach across the country to ensure that the amateur football community is brought up to speed on the latest in tackling and blocking techniques to ensure proper safety in our sport.ā€
