OUA announces 2012 OUA football all-stars

HAMILTON– Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announced the 2012 football all-star teams. The defending Vanier Cup champion McMaster Marauders and the No. 8 Western Mustangs find themselves ahead of the pack with the most representatives on the first and second teams.

The McMaster Marauders offence racked up the most points this season and has taken home six first team all-star awards. Quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) set an OUA record in pass completion percentage with 68.9 percent accuracy. He also led the CIS in passing touchdowns with 19. It makes it easier to be a great quarterback with great protection and three members of McMaster’s o-line have been recognized for their performances. Centre Elliott Montag (Georgetown, Ont.), guard Jason Medeiros (GHHamilton, Ont.) and tackle Matt Sewell (Milton, Ont.) are all first team all-stars. Inside receiver Robert Babic (Burlington, Ont.) was Quinlan’s favourite target, he snatched 51 catches en route to being named to the first team all-star squad. Third-year place kicker Tyler Crapigna (Nepean, Ont.) joins his offensive teammates on the first team.

The Western Mustangs led the OUA in total rushing yards with 2,313 yards. Second-year running back Garret Sanvido (Vancouver, B.C.) accounted for nearly half of those and is a first team all-star. Offensive tackle Joshua Burley (Guelph, Ont.) helped create room for Western’s premiere run game, and he is a first team all-star. Fourth-year kicker Lirim Hajrullahu (St. Catharines, Ont.) joins his team mates on the first team after topping the leader board with a league-high 40.6 yards per punt.

Though the Queen’s Gaels are renowned for their defence, the tri-colour finished fourth in league scoring and three athletes have been named to the OUA first team on offence. Big man Derek Morris (Napanee, Ont.) makes his mark at the offensive guard position, while fifth-year running back Ryan Granberg (Sherwood Park, Alta.) and senior receiver Giovanni Aprile (Toronto) represent Queen’s run and pass game, respectively.

The Guelph Gryphons made tremendous strides on special teams in 2012 and boast two athletes on the OUA first team. Rush cover Cameron Walker (London, Ont.) had 24 special teams tackles as well as one sack, one forced fumble and one pass breakup. Rookie returner A’dre Fraser (Halifax, N.S.) returned 30 punts for 327 yards, in addition to averaging 24 yards per kickoff return.

Rounding out the first team all-stars are receivers Jordan Brescacin (Tecumseh, Ont.) of the Windsor Lancers and Nick Anapolsky (Guelph, Ont.) of the Waterloo Warriors. Brescacin broke two OUA records in his final year of eligibility, putting his name on most single season receptions with 68 and most career receptions with 192.

The Queen’s defence was as sturdy as ever in 2012, and five athletes have been named first team all-stars. Defensive tackle John Miniaci (Toronto) returns to the first team while d-end Derek Wiggan (Toronto) jumps up from last year’s second team to the first after recording six sacks and 24 solo tackles. Linebacker Sam Sabourin (Stittsville, Ont.) continued to cause headaches to opposing quarterbacks, meanwhile defensive backs TJ Chase-Dunawa (Toronto) and Andrew Lue (Markham, Ont.) showed why the Gaels pass defence is tops in the league.

The McMaster Marauders led the league in total defence and restricted OUA opponents to a measly 15.6 points per game, the maroon men have four first team defensive all-stars to their credit. Fourth-year defensive end Ben D’Aguilar blew away the CIS single season sack record with 12.5, and joins teammates Aram Eisho (Hamilton, Ont.), Joey Cupido (Hamilton, Ont.) and Mike Daly (Kitchener, Ont.) on the OUA defensive first team.

Western Mustangs tackle Daryl Waud (Hamilton, Ont.) and defensive half Harold Mutabola (Toronto) and Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) of the Laurier Golden Hawks complete the list of OUA defensive first team all-stars.

In addition to the three offensive first team all-stars, the Western Mustangs pick up four more nods on the second team. Fifth-year centre Greg Willson (LaSalle, Ont.), along with guards Eric Armitage (London, Ont.) and Mike Van Praet (London, Ont.) represent the Mustangs o-line as second team all-stars. Third-year receiver Brian Marshall (London, Ont.) had a big year for the ‘Stangs. He was the favorite target of Western quarterbacks, his brother Donnie and freshman Will Finch, snatching forty catches for 765 yards and six touchdowns.

The Guelph Gryphons are 105th Yates Cup finalists, and their historical season was a true team effort. The Gryphons boast three offensive second team all-stars in six-two 300 lbs. tackle Matt Richardson (Caledonia, Ont.), third-year running back Rob Farquharson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and wide receiver Dillon Dimitroff (Burlington, Ont.).

Lancer quarterback Austin Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.) led the nation in passing yards and threw for an impressive 18 touchdowns. He repeats his 2011 performance on the offensive second team at quarterback. Punter Dan Cerino (Stoney Creek, Ont.) averaged 40.5 yards per punt, and was narrowly edged out the top spot. Cerino is a second team all-star.

Gaels inside receiver Justin Chapdelaine (Abbotsford, B.C.) tied for the team lead in receptions and scored four touchdowns to earn a place on the offensive second team. He is joined by fourth-year kick returner Chris Patrician (Toronto).

The Ottawa Gee-Gees went 3-5 this season, though their final season stretch nearly earned them a spot in the playoffs. Fourth-year running back Brendan Gillanders (Orleans, Ont.) led the team in rushing with 772 yards and scored nine touchdowns. He is joined by fellow senior Matt Falvo (Welland, Ont.) on the second team. Falvo broke two OUA records this season, knocking down longstanding marks in the category of longest punt and career field goals.

Wide receiver Will Austin (St. Catharines, Ont.) represents York on the second team all-star list. He is the first Lion to appear on the all-star team since 2007.

McMaster special teams expert Spencer Moore (Hamilton, Ont.) rounds out the second team offence at the position of rush cover.

Turning to the defence, defensive tackle Tanvir Bhangoo (Brampton, Ont.) and SAM linebacker Nick Shortill (Nobleton, Ont.) represent the McMaster Marauders. They are joined by Western veterans Pawel Kruba (Tecumseh, Ont.), Jamie Symianick (Montreal, Que.), Mike Spence (Burlington, Ont.) and Dylan Ainsworth (Delta, B.C.) on the second team defensive unit.

The Gryphons gritty defence is represented by defensive end Mike Millar (Port Colborne, Ont.), linebacker John Rush (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and defensive half Bryan Dunjko (Aurora, Ont.).

Windsor’s Shea Pierre (Mississauga, Ont.) and Matt McGarva (Surrey, B.C.) plus Ottawa’s Ettore Lattanzio (Ottawa) complete the OUA second team all-star roster.

The 56 football all-stars were selected by the ten head coaches across OUA.
