OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK 9: Sinopoli & 2 hawks

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 23, 2010.

OFFENCE: Brad Sinopoli, Ottawa Gee-Gees, Quarterback

Fourth-year quarterback Brad Sinopoli from Peterborough, Ont., became the all-time Gee-Gees leader for most touchdowns in a season with 22. Despite shooting for the all-time CIS record for most passing yards in a season, Sinopoli took what the Guelph defence gave him to rush for 157 yards; including a 58 yard touchdown. His combined stats (passing and rushing) of 361 yards in Saturday’s 54-11 win were almost equal to Guelph’s entire 374 offensive yards. Sinopoli finished the regular season as the OUA and CIS leader with 301 attempts, 184 completions, 2756 passing yards, and 22 touchdowns.

DEFENCE:
Samuel Aird, Laurier Golden Hawks, Middle Linebacker

Fourth-year middle linebacker Samuel Aird stepped into the void left by injured Daniel Bishop and excelled. The English major led the Hawks with nine solo tackles while helping to shut down the Lancers run game. He also picked up one of Laurier’s four sacks on the day. The Hawks held Windsor’s offence to under 100 yards on the ground.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Shamawd Chambers, Laurier Golden Hawks, Receiver

Third-year receiver Shamawd Chambers gave the Hawks a much needed boost after the Lancers scored their first major of the match on Saturday to make the score 23-10. The arts student returned the Lancers kickoff 101 yards for Laurier’s second ever kickoff return for a touchdown. The score with just one minute left on the clock gave the Golden Hawks a 30-10 advantage going into the break.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
