OUA Players of the Week 5: Kelly, McGarva & Heap

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending October 2, 2011.

OFFENCE: Shane Kelly, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Quarterback

Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., had one of his best performances in a Golden Hawks uniform as Wilfrid Laurier defeated the No. 10 Ottawa Gee-Gees 51-16 on Saturday. Kelly, who leads the CIS in touchdown passes with 16 and passing yards with 1,599, threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for another as Laurier snapped their three game losing streak. His 20 completions on 34 attempts gives him 124 on the season, also tops in the nation.

DEFENCE: Matt McGarva, Windsor Lancers, Defensive back
Defensive back Matt McGarva of Surrey, B.C. became the fourth player in CIS history to return an interception 109 yards for a touchdown. McGarva’s effort is just three yards short of the longest interception return in history. He also registered four solo tackles to help Windsor to a 41-21 victory over Guelph.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Dillon Heap, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, Punt returner
Punt returner Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont., set the new all-time OUA mark for punt return yards in a career in Wilfrid Laurier’s 51-16 win over the No. 10 Ottawa Gee-Gees. Just 15 yards shy of Don Hollerhead’s record heading into the game, Heap broke the mark early in the second quarter on a 27 yard return and finished the day with seven returns for 74 yards. Heap continues to climb the CIS all-time list as well and with 1,946 career yards, he is on pace to become just the third player ever to crack the 2,000 yard barrier.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
