OUA players of week 5: Quinlan, Shorthill, Patrician

HAMILTON, Ont. – The following student-athletes have been named OUA Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 30, 2012.

OFFENCE: Kyle Quinlan, McMaster Marauders, Quarterback
Quarterback Kyle Quinlan led the McMaster Marauders to a 33-27 victory over the No. 6 Western Mustangs. The fifth-year pivot did damage with both his arm and his legs as he was the game’s leading rusher with 145 yards on 10 carries with one touchdown. In the air, he completed 18 of 32 passes (56 percent completion rate) for 247 yards and two touchdowns. The South Woodslee, Ont. native remains interception free five games into the season and the win keeps McMaster in sole possession of first-place in OUA. This is Quinlan’s second offensive player of the week honour in as many weeks.

DEFENCE: Nick Shorthill, McMaster Marauders, Linebacker
Linebacker Nick Shorthill was a defensive force for the Marauders as McMaster spoiled Western’s Homecoming with a 33-27 win . The second-year player was all over the field making plays. The Nobleton, Ont. native registered 11 tackles, 10 of which were of the solo variety. He also had three quarterback sacks as the McMaster defence applied constant pressure on Western’s quarterbacks.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Chris Patrician, Queen’s Gaels, Receiver
Third-year receiver Chris Patrician broke Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Gee-Gees wide open with a 9! 1-yard punt return at 9:57 in the second quarter. The Toronto native’s runback put the No. 5 Gaels up 11-0 in a game that they would eventually take by a score of 32-25.
