The Metro Toronto Wildcats junior varsity squad visited the Etobicoke Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Centennial Stadium in Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) action. The Wildcats entered action with a 1 and 1 record while the Eagles posted an 0 and 2 record. The teams share the same playing border which leads to close rivalry. Some players even go to the same school (or in one case live in the same building) but compete on opposite teams.
The game saw the Eagles begin on offense and looked in a gambling mood early when they lined up for 4th and 1 1/2 yard play in their own end. A procedure call negated the move and the Eagles settled for a punt. The following Wildcat drive ended when the Eagles Timothy Schjering intercepted the Brett Stein pass; an inadvertent whistle by the officials negated any return.
The first quarter was marred by penalties and injuries and both teams struggled to get any flow to their game. Finally at the 48 second mark the Wildcats Kyle Brown caught a 40 yard toss from Stein for the first score. Dayvon Love converted the kick and put the Wildcat up 7 to 0. Love plays for high school Don Bosco, one of the teams that has representation on both squads.
Early in the second quarter the Eagles lined up for a punt in their own end but did not handle the snap cleanly and turned the ball over on downs. Two plays later Wildcat running back Pelle Jorgen went for a 25 yard run and put the ‘cats up 14 (Love convert). The Wildcats continued to dominate the second quarter when towering receiver Malcolm Carter outjumped the coverage for a 11 yard touchdown. On the ensuing kick off the Wildcats attempted an onside kick only to have the recovering nullified by an offside penalty. No worries, they recovered the next kick. What ensued a few plays later was the ‘play of the day’ when QB Brett Stein naked bootlegged to his left, set his feet, and threw a great pass to Carter, who again ‘outjumped’ the secondary and put the Wildcats up 28 to 0 just before half.
The second half saw the Eagles come back and make a game of it. After a Jorgen Kickoff return of 75 yards, the first of the half, was called back on a penalty the Eagles Diego Rivera intercepted the Wildcats and gave the hometown the momentum they needed. With new QB Trivel Pinto at control, the Eagles score after a nifty 48 yard run by Immanuel Archer. Pinto scored on a 4 yard run with 6:08 remaining in the quarter, and after the convert was unsuccessful, made the score 28 to 6.
The teams traded touchdowns in the final frame with the Eagles Archer scoring mid-way through the quarter and Pinto adding the 2 point convert. Metro responded with a great drive of their own, hilited by some impressive running by Pelle Jorgen. Jorgen scored the last touchdown of the game making the final 35 to 14.
