The Markham Raiders are looking to put a tough Week 1 behind them this weekend when they host the Oshawa Hawkeyes.
The 2012 season started with more of a crash than a bang, as the Raiders were hammered 28-3 against a strong Cumberland Panthers team last weekend.
βWe were hoping for a lot more out of the gate,β said Head Coach Anthony Tombler. βWe didnβt play our best, didnβt get our matchups and our big boys (on the defensive line) couldnβt make the plays.β
The Raidersβ rushing defence was scorched for 244 rushing yards allowed, and thus the team spent much of this week working with their front seven.
βLong runs were the issue, we werenβt able to squeeze the ball carrier to the inside,β said Coach Tombler.
Tackling was also an area for concern in the Week 1 results.
βWe had guys at a point of attack but the Panthers were able to break our tackles,β said Coach Tombler. βWe definitely need to improve.β
Despite only scoring three points, the Raiders offence was able to establish a rhythm and move the ball downfield numerous times. The offence combined for 197 total yards gained with an equal emphasis for passing and running.
βWe played well on offence,β said Coach Tombler. βWe just took some bad penalties and were unable to finish.β
This weekβs opponent, the Oshawa Hawkeyes, play a similar brand of football to the Raiders. They defeated Brantford 22-14 last week.
βIt should be a great game,β said Coach Tombler. βWeβre looking to build on the positives from Week 1 and grow as a team.β
Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
