OVFL: Sabercats upended by Ironmen in last minute of play


Hamilton scored with less than a minute remaining to defeat the visiting Sault Ste Marie Sabercats in Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) quarter-final playoff action Sunday afternoon.

The Sabercats scored first and took a halftime lead to the locker room. Kicker Carlo Carchidi kicked an opening quarter 27 yard field goal to put the visitors up. Sabercat QB Casey Wright found Joey Plastino for a TD pass to put the visitors up 10 to 0 before the Ironmen responded with their first touchdown. Halftime score was 10 to 7.

Hamilton came out of the locker room on fire scoring two TDs to put them up 21 to 10. The Sabercats responded with a Jordan Vernelli TD (PAT blocked) making the score 21 to 16, a score that would hold up until less than 3 minutes to play. The Sabercats regained the lead when they marched down the field and scored on an Andrew Marshall TD reception. Alex Morrison scored a 2 point convert putting the visitors up 24 to 21 with 1:28 remaining in the game.

The Ironmen responded and drove the entire field themselves with some big play passes scoring to secure the 28 to 24 victory.

The Ironmen host the Mississauga Warriors Sunday (1pm) at Ron Joyce Stadium at McMaster University.
