Peewee Lions one win away from perfect season

The Peewee Lions of the Ontario Minor Football League are one win away from a perfect season after a 36-2 win over the Ajax/Pickering Dolphins earned them a spot in the championship game.

Sunday nights game was closer than the score indicates, as both teams played solid defense and kept each others offence in check much of the night. Cambridge, however, were consistently able to make the big plays when needed, both on offence and defense.
The game started with both offences having trouble moving the ball. Cambridge handed over the ball on downs in the midfield. Ajax also couldn’t get any movement, and after a big tackle by Daniel Sipes Cambridge recovered the ball on downs.
After a Cambridge penalty, the Lions faced a fourth down, fifteen yard situation. Quarterback Brayden Hill sent a pass straight up the middle where Alex Salytchev in double coverage went high and came down with the ball on the offensive side of the line. The 55 yard play, followed by a Hill to Brandon Metz two point convert pass, gave the Lions an eight point lead. It was all they would need.
The Dolphins pressed in the second quarter, but sacks by Amber Baetsen, Clay De-Gannes and Derek Cole slowed their progress.
A Brayden Ralph touchdown extended the Lions lead, but late in the quarter Ajax would threaten. Having first and goal on the three yard line, The Lions defense stymied the Dolphins, leading to a third down fumble recovery by Mitch Amis. Ajax did manage an end-zone tackle on the next play, for their only two points of the game.
In the third quarter, the Lions started to dominate the play as well as the score. Another Brayden Ralph touchdown flattened Ajax’s spirit, while the defence, led by Baetson, continued to deny them.
The fourth quarter was all Lions, as Derek Cole scored two touchdowns and Daniel Sipes got his second of the game. Two more sacks, with Cole, Baetson and Terrel Crawford getting the tackles, helped ensure the Ajax offence never got started.

The Lions play for the championship and a perfect season against the Mississauga Warriors next Sunday 12:00 at Centennial Field in Etobicoke.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
