Petra’s Combine Prep: The 40 Yard Dash Drive Phase

We know all our CFC athletes are working hard in all aspects to improve their game and create opportunities, and a big part of that is getting tested in combines. Having great testing numbers in your 40 yard dash, shuttle, vertical and broad jumps are always going to be a viable pathway to bigger and better opportunities at higher levels, which is why we are not only rolling across western Canada with our CFC Showcase tour, but we have enlisted the fantastic Petra Richard, a speed and strength development specialist with over a decade of coaching experience, to make sure you’re performing ands testing at your best. Today, Petra will be walking us through the second step in a great 40 yard dash: the Drive Phase.

The Drive Phase – 15-20 yards
This can be called the “pistons phase” continuing in the position till naturally entering the acceleration phase. The pistons phase in a 40, mimics a “block start” in track and field. Once an athlete has done the above,
1. As you Push forward, take 3-5 large powerful drives (steps) using opposite arm and bent leg
2. lift knees to 90 Degrees, bringing knee closer to their chest as you take those powerful steps
3. Remaining in a straight line (neck, hips, glutes) when pushing out and forward
4. Falling forward/forward lean staying as low as you can
5. Ankles are flexed while pushing off the ground.

Come back tomorrow for the next phase of a great 40 yard dash!

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
