PFC Game of the Week (3): Outcome may trigger logjam

The Game of the Week in the PFC will feature the Edmonton Huskies (3-1) visiting the Regina Thunder (2-1).

The Thunder are coming off an incredible win in Saskatoon in a wild finish.  With 38 seconds to go and the Hilltops up six points, the Thunder defense would stop the Hilltops on a third and short deep in the Hilltops end.  A few seconds later the Thunder offense would punch it in the endzone and with the convert would win their second game of the season.

The outcomes creates  log jam at the top of the PFC standings, as three teams are tied for second with four points, while the Huskies sit on top with six points as a team that has played four games.

The Thunder have used a number of different weapons so far this season. As a matter of fact the only player in the top five of their respective positions is quarterback Asher Hastings.  He has the best effeicency rating in the PFC with 102.3.  His 48 completions however is third most in the Conference and his 591 yards is fourth best.  He has thrown six touchdowns compared to three interceptions.

The first place Huskies on the other hand have a number of players at or near the top of their statistical categories.    Kicker Jonathan Heidebrecht leads the Conference with 43 points scored, while quarterback Trevor Erdmann has completed the most passes with 60 and thrown for 892 yards (second most).

Defensively Huskies’ Adam Kuntz and Colton William lead the Conference with 58 and 47 points respectively.   Kuntz has compiled a conference best 25 tackles, while William has 18 stops and a 98 yard pick six.

Both head coaches will tell you that their clubs have turned the ball over too many times.  The Huskies have coughed it up 10 times, while the Thunder have given it away nine times.

With both offenses and defenses fairly even, this game could come down to the kicker.  Regina’s William McGee is eight of nine in field goals, while Edmonton’s Heidebrecht has been good seven of 12 times.

The weather in Regina on Sunday will be sunny and 20 degrees, great conditions for an offensive game.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
