POIRIER, CARON AND THOMPSON NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (QUFL)

Receiver Alexandre Poirier of the University of Sherbrooke Vert & Or, linebacker Max Caron of the Concordia Stingers and defensive back Jeff Thompson of McGill Redmen have been selected as the Quebec University Football Leagueā€™s (QUFL) players of the week for the period ending September 5, 2009.

Highlights : Sherbrooke Vert & Or receiver Alexandre Poirier is the QUFL offensive player of the week. He was a dominant force as the Vert & Or erased a 21-point first half deficit in its season opening 33-29 loss to the Montreal Carabins at CEPSUM Stadium. The fifth year Physical Education student hauled in 11 passes for 153-yards including a spectacular 45-yard touchdown that allowed Sherbrooke to tie the game at 24 early in the fourth quarter. The Victoriaville native also had 31 yards on kick return and another nine on two carries.

Highlights: Concordia Stingers middle linebacker Max Caron is the QUFL defensive player of the week. Playing in his first league game, Caron recorded 3.5 tackles and scored the game-winning touchdown with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter, picking off a Jesse Andrews pass in the end zone to give the Stingers a 17-7 advantage. Concordia hung on to win the season opener 17-14.

Highlights : McGill defensive back Jeff Thompson has been named as QUFL special teams player of the week. A first-year marketing student, Thompson made a statement in his debut with the Redmen racking up a game-high 181 all-purpose yards in McGillā€™s 50-9 season opening loss at Laval. The 23-year old native of St. Louis, Missouri set a single-game McGill record with 144 yards on five kickoff returns and added 37 more yards on five punt returns.
