PRESS RELEASE: Carleton Ravens Name New Coordinators

Head Coach Corey Grant and the Carleton Ravens football program are proud to announce their staff of coordinators ahead of the 2022-23 season. In his first season as Head Coach, Grant is joined by Josh Sacobie, Alex Lothian, Mark Nelson, and Carl Tolmie.

Josh Sacobie, Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach

New Offensive Coordinator Josh Sacobie enters his ninth season with the Ravens having been with the program since 2012. Sacobie, a former USPORTS standout and uOttawa Hall of Fame inductee, also retains the title of Quarterbacks Coach. A three-time OUA All-Star and a two-time CIS All-Canadian Sacobie finished his career as the leading passer in Gee-Gees history and was third all-time in the CIS. Prior to joining the Ravens, Sacobie was the Quarterbacks Coach at the University of Ottawa in 2011 after previously being the offensive coordinator at St. Patrick’s High School in Ottawa and at CEGEP de L’Outaouais.

Carl Tolmie, Recruiting Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach

Joining Sacobie on offence is Recruiting Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach Carl Tolmie. Tolmie returns to Carleton where he studied as a member of the Ravens from 1997-2001. When injuries limited his contributions to the football team he started coaching locally with the Gloucester Dukes. Tolmie then moved on to the USPORTS level with Sherbrooke (2004-2006), Montreal (2007), Guelph (2010) and then returned to Ottawa in 2016 with the University of Ottawa where he coached the offensive line for six years. Carl has coached OVFL, QJFL, Team Quebec, and Team Ontario teams, with guest CFL coaching experience in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Ottawa.

Alex Lothian, Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach

On defence the Ravens will be under the direction of Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach Alex Lothian. Lothian joins the Ravens from the Saint Mary’s Huskies where he’s held the roles of Recruiting Coordinator, Defensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator since 2018. Lothian is also the current Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach for U18 Football Nova Scotia. Recognized across USPORTS for his abilities, Lothian was the East Defensive Line Coach for the 2019 and 2022 East-West Bowl games.

Mark Nelson, Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach

Mark Nelson joins the Ravens with over 30 years of coaching experience. Most recently the Special Teams Coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts, Nelson returns to Ottawa to join the Ravens after previously spending six years with the REDBLACKS. Nelson’s years with the REDBLACKS included winning a Grey Cup in 2016 as the team’s Defensive Coordinator. As a coach Nelson is a three-time Grey Cup Champion having won in 1993, 1996, and 2016. Prior to coaching, Nelson played seven seasons in the CFL spending six with Calgary before finishing his career in Saskatchewan.
