PREVIEW: Rivals battle for supremacy

This week, Holy Trinity Titans will play host to St. Stephens Royals and reignite their rivalry in LOSSA action.

The Royals are a somewhat different rival to the Titans than Paul Dwyer or even the Gators. Ā Unlike the latter two teams, many players from Holy Trinity and St. Stephens know each other and even play on the same team outside of the high school football season.

This effect makes the rivalry much more personal and nasty. Ā For years, both sides have clamoured in about who would win if the two sides ever met on a field and this Friday they’ll finally get the chance to prove who is really the better team.

Holy Trinity is looking to get back on the winning track after losing to rival Paul Dwyer and the Knights of Columbus Trophy. The Titans offense is especially hungry to see the field and prove they are a much better offense than the one last week that coughed up four costly interceptions.

The Titans should look to run more after quarterback Chris Waldinsperger, who in the past had looked very efficient, showed he could not run a passing based attack. The Titans’ offensive identity has always been known for their ground game so they should return to it and pass only when necessary or able to take advantage of cheating defense.

The Titans defense showed well on the scoreboard last week (only allowing 16 offensive points) but on the field the CFC#47 St. Paul Saints picked up yardage with relative ease.

The Royals run an offense similar to Holy Trinity’s old one, with most of the yardage coming off jet sweep runs and confusing motions. As the Royals try and funnel the Titans inside, the Titans must keep contain to the speedy Royals ball carriers in check on the sweeps.

The Royals must tackle Waldinsperger early and often in the passing game. Ā The Titans signal caller can be dangerous when given time, or outside the pocket, throwing the ball on the run or even running when nothing else is available.

The biggest key is tackling as the Titans running backs close to the line of scrimmage. Ā The Titans running backs are small but incredibly elusive in the open field. If the Titans running backs get past the linebackers, a first down will be the least of the defenses worries, as both backs have proved they can break seemingly any run to the end zone if they get space.

This game should be one of the more emotionally charged games of the LOSSA regular season, with both teams hungry to prove that they’re the better team.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
