SHERBROOKE Β β Facing the number one team in the country on their turf can be a daunting task but that challenge is ahead of the Bishopβs Gaiters Football team on Sunday, Oct. 19.Β The Gaiters travel to Quebec City to play the Laval Rouge et Or at Stade Telus-UL. It will be both teamsβ sixth contest in the RSEQ University Football League this year.Β Kickoff is slated forΒ 1 p.m.
The Gaiters are coming off their first win of the season, a 17-13 victory at McGill on Thursday, Oct. 9. They will look to bring positives from that match-up into a place where they have not had success.
When the two teams step onto the fieldΒ on SundayΒ Laval will not have played since Oct. 5 when they topped Concordia for their CIS record 23rdΒ straight victory. It was also their 68thΒ straight win on home turf.
βIt is a great challenge for us,β said Gaiters head coach Kevin Mackey. βWhere thereβs a will thereβs a way. It will be a really neat experience for some of our young guys to play in that stadium.Β Itβs a great atmosphere to play a football game. We are going to take it one play at a time. It is loud, it is fast and it is fun up there.Β We will see what happens at the end of the game.β
Last weekβs victory kept the Gaitersβ playoff hopes alive although there is still work to be done.Β Bishopβs (1-4) sits a game behind Sherbrooke (2-3) for the fourth and final playoff spot.Β The Gaiters face No. 1 Laval (5-0) this week, No. 5 Montreal (5-1) next weekend and wrap-up the 2014 regular season with a tilt against the Vert et Or when the Mayorβs Cup on the line at Coulter Field.Β Sherbrooke plays McGill (0-5) this weekend, then hosts No. 9 Concordia (4-2) before making the cross-town voyage to play the Gaiters onΒ Nov. 1.
The Gaiters kicked off with Laval in week three of the 2014 season on Coulter Field.Β The Rouge et Or eventually rolled to a 72-15 victory in Lennoxville, however Bishopβs trailed by just a field-goal halfway through the second quarter.
