ST. STEPHEN ROYALS (LOSSAA – BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO):

“We just want to be competitive and make the playoffs.”

Those are the goals of the both the junior and senior St. Stephen Royals of the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (LOSSAA) as described by Co-Head Coach Darren Danylyshen.

Danylyshen, who will be at the helm alongside Chris Page, offered that both squads will zone in on their key strengths which they hope will translate into success on the field this fall.

“The junior team should boast some speed,” assessed the Royals Co-Head Coach.  “We have many grade nines that’ve started last year returning.”

“The senior team should be well balanced with solid running backs returning and several key grade eleven receivers moving up.”

The Royals will be offensively balanced in 2014.

While the team has lost several players including receiver Idahosa Yorke (Mount Allison), defensive back Darby Bradley (Windsor Lancers), Zach Weirheid and Sebastian Shearing as well as several linemen, the Royals have great expectations for two players.

“Tim Vanheuvelen (offensive/defensive line) will be a welcome addition at the senior level and we have a solid quarterback in Drew Besco,” said Danylyshen.

However, Vanheuvelen and Besco are not the only two players to watch for on the Royals – running back/linebacker Aiden McKenna, slotback/running back Evan Reece as well as “defensive forces” Niko Isovski and Liam Donnelley will play a significant role for the team to achieve their goals on the field.

Even though the senior Royals are defending LOSSAA ‘AAAA’ Champions and the junior squad enjoyed an undefeated record (6-0) in 2013, both squads are expecting opposing teams to mount formidable competition. In his assessment of the competition, Danylyshen expects two teams to emerge as the frontrunners at the top of the conference.

“LOSSA is always tough,” expressed the Royals Co-Head Coach.  “Pickering and Dwyer will be the teams to beat this season.”
