Chris (Tex) Mutch, quarterback and offensive co-coordinator of the P.E.I. Privateers, was named the 2010 Most Valuable Player of the Maritime Football League on Friday.

Mutch won the Peter Murray Memorial Award after leading the Privateers offence to 169 points in six games, six points behind 2010 league champion Moncton Mustangs (174).

P.E.I.’s 28 points per game was one point shy of Moncton’s 29 points per game.

The Privateers finished the season 3-5, including a 22-15 quarter-final playoff victory over the Halifax Shockers.

It was P.E.I.’s first playoff win in seven seasons in the MFL.

The Privateers lost 63-7 to Moncton in the semifinals without Mutch, who missed the game because of injury.

“Chris was a major force in the league this year and developed the most potent offence in the league,” said Terry Allen, Privateers general manager. “His ability to pass, run, and scramble kept every team defence in the league guessing this year.”

Mutch was born in Charlottetown, but played high school football in Ardmore, Okla., before suiting up for the Mount Allison University football team in Sackville, N.B.

Offensive most outstanding player went to Jon Haines, running back of the Saint John Wanderers, while most outstanding defensive player was earned by Al Birthwright, linebacker with the Dartmouth Knights.

Mark MacDougall of the Mustangs won rookie of the year. Coach of year went to Moncton’s Rob Weir.

Mutch also was named to the MFL’s all-decade team before its 10th anniversary season began in June.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
