Head coach Mickey Donovan is pleased to announce CJFL all-Canadian punter Stephen Fabian has committed to the Concordia Stingers football program.

Fabian of Tilley, Alta. has enjoyed a long, accomplished career in his home province, and now will head East to use his final year of university eligibility.

“We felt this was a position we needed to fill and that it was a priority for us,” said Donovan of Fabian who is expected to handle punting and kicking duties. “Being such a young team, Stephen’s leadership skills will benefit our players on special teams. And it’s always good to have a confident, mature punter/kicker on the field. Our staff is thrilled Stephen chose Concordia as his new home.”

In 2011 Fabian played for Team Alberta in the Canada Cup winning a silver medal. He was named to the tournament all-star team and was named Special Teams MVP.

The versatile athlete played four seasons at the University of Alberta, where he had a stellar career that included being named to the East West Bowl roster in 2015.

Last season Fabian took his talents to the Calgary Colts of the Prairie Football Conference. He punted 63 times for a 41.6 average and was named to the CJFL all-Canadian defensive team.

Fabian, who checks in at six foot two inches and 183 pounds, was approached by a few universities but he chose Concordia because he wanted to work with kicking coach Gerry McGrath.

“I’m happy to have him here,” McGrath said. “I’m looking forward to working with him. He has a pretty big leg, he’s very athletic and he’s strong. He’s got a lot of potential.”

Fabian will join the Stingers this summer.
