Western landing

Yates Cup Champions announce addition of CIS transfer.

Liam Mahara is the newest member of Purple Reign.

This past week, the Western Mustangs announced that the 6’2, 210 pound running back from Vancouver, British Columbia has joined the team.

This past season, Mahara suited up for the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds. Β With his transfer to the Yates Cup Champions, he will sit out this upcoming season.Β  However, the running back has four years of CIS eligibility remaining.

β€œOverall, I felt the benefits of making the move to Western were impossible to resist,” explained Mahara of his decision to transfer.Β  β€œI’m thrilled to be moving across the country and getting a fresh start in a new community with a university that has such a rich football background-much like my experience at Vancouver College.”

β€œAlong with their great football tradition comes a reputable fan base; it is always packed at their stadium for home games, and that is something that I am really looking forward to being a part of at Western.”

Despite his excitement of joining the Mustangs, leaving the Thunderbirds and the West Coast was not an easy decision.

β€œMy experience at UBC was so positive,” expressed Mahara.Β  β€œCoach Olson is such a players coach and so easy to relate to and learn from.”

β€œIt’ll be hard to leave my teammates as I bonded with a great group of guys over the year.”

Previous to the Thunderbirds, Mahara played for the Vancouver College Fighting Irish of the British Columbia High School Football Association (BCHSFA).
